It all Starts Today

My very favorite sports teams season kind of unofficially gets under way today and I'm excited. The 2010 Carolina Panthers season starts today when the players report to training camp in Spartanburg SC. It's just the beginning of a long season that unlike any in recent years will feature a lot more changes and a lot of uncertainty. With uncertainty can come optimism. So today I find myself cautiously optimistic. Oh what the heck I will admit it. I'm fired up.... BRING ON FOOTBALL SEASON !!

Is anyone else fired up and ready for football season? Let me know who you pull for High School, College, Pros, All three? i love all three myself but there is just something extra special about the NFL for me. Lemme know who is excited out there that it's almost here. For you NFL fans this time next year there very likely will be no football so lets enjoy this year!

Worst Person of the Week 7/27/10

OK folks, It's time for this weeks installment of Worst Person. Last week we had an epic battle between Rachel Uchetel and The Cast of Jersey Shore. As with everything it seems recently the cast won! This week a few new nominees. Some of which you might not be familiar with.

Melinda Dennehy - This 41 year old former teacher joins the ranks of the Hot for teacher crowd as yesterday she pleaded guilty to a charge she e-mailed nude photographs of herself to a 15-year-old student. And in the process is becoming a bit of an internet sensation like Debra Lefave. Apparently she was getting career advice from Mary Kay Letourneau. Shameful.

Andrew Brietbart - Andrew makes the list not only because he is a blowhard but because he posted an edited video of USDA employee Shirley Sherrod trying to defend the Tea Party movement by showing that the NAACP is actually racist. Ms. Sherrod was promptly fired and then when the whole context came out many apologies and back-tracking took place. Make sure you get it right the first time when it's this inflammatory Andrew.

Alvin Greene - The true accidental candidate from South Carolina who besides completely unknown, having little money, and apparently not too much common (or political) sense won SC's Democratic primary and will face incumbent Senator Jim DeMint in the fall. He makes the list this week for endorsing a rap song for his campaign that was meant to poke fun at him. If this guy can run it makes almost wish I had run for Senate when I lived in SC.

St. Louis Pigeons - No that's not the name of a sports team it's actually birds which in this case caused the cancellation of a Kings of Leon concert in St. Louis this past weekend after repeatedly pooping in bassist Jared Followill's mouth. YUCK! But worse than that fans only got to hear three songs. Something tells me that there is gonna be some pigeon-cide in St. Louis this week.

There are your nominees folks. Please vote in the poll and leave your comments on who you think this week's worst person is. I can't wait to read these comments!

(Just a side note. Worst Person of the Week will be on vacation with me next week and will return the following week. Maybe we will have to do a super sized version)

Roof Damage

The other part of our camping trip that I don't think I discussed on here was the damage we got in a windstorm while we were gone. We came home to find shingles blown off the roof and water damage on the interior of our master bedroom "popcorn' ceiling. The damage was not quite as extensive as this image I found on google but similar. I met with a contractor on Friday and he thinks to prevent it from happening again we need to have the entire roof replaced. *gulp* Since we don't have $7-9 Grand just laying around we quickly called our insurance company. Since I work in the insurance industry I am of course highly suspicious of insurance companies and just spoke with them. Of course they can't come and look until next week when I am up in NY. But it sounds like everything will be taken care of. Anxiety doing much better today than it was this weekend.
Anyone else ever had any roof/storm/shingle damage? Please tell me it all worked out OK.

Worst Person of the Week 7/20/10

OK Folks it is time once again to find out who the worst person of the week is. Last weeks run away winner was Mel Gibson who really had no contest. This week will probably be a bit more interesting. So here we go with this weeks nominees:

The Cast of Jersey Shore - Who is asking for more money? These guys are. As if MTV couldn't’t take a trip down to Wildwood and throw out a net and get the same cast. (or better) Add that to the fact that Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is writing a self help book. (yes that is no typo) and these guys deserve a nomination here for WP.

Paris Hilton - Paris is ticked off at stories she was arrested AGAIN for possession of marijuana when in fact she was only just questioned and released. Imagine that Paris angry about media coverage. Yeesh. Paris is always WP worthy but getting detained for pot 2 times in less than 10 days is special even for her. Oh and as you can see to the left she was photographed topless this weekend too. Double Yeesh.

George Steinbrenner - A vote for George is more like a lifetime achievement award for one of the surliest meanest nastiest owners in all of professional sports. Yes he passed away last week leaving a nation of Yankee fans in mourning but that doesn't change history and turn him into a nice guy. I think George deserves some consideration and he probably would be proud of it.

Rachel Uchitel - Rachel is now having to go into celebrity rehab with Dr. Drew. For someone whose chief claim to fame is sleeping with Tiger Woods and then taking bribe money (a lot of it) not to blab about it to the press shouldn't your 15 minutes already be up? Of course not. She is now probably hooked on pills and needs rehab. Tick Tock Rachel Tick Tock.
There you have it folks. Lets here your comments and please vote in the poll for this Worst Person of the Week. Who should it be?

Going Camping...

Going to be off the rest of the week because we are heading off to the North Carolina mountains tomorrow to go camping with some good friends of ours. Headed to a place called Julian Price Park which sounds lovely except for the lack of electricity. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these people who think camping involves a Holiday Inn however I would like an electrical outlet to plug in a radio. Everyone has said this place doesn't even have lights in the bathroom. Solution? I went out to BJ's and bought a whole ton of batteries yesterday.
I am really looking forward to the trip. I haven't been camping in years and my son has of course never been. I think he is old enough to actually enjoy it now. I am also hoping to get some fishing done... possibly teaching my son as well. Now since he has the attention span of a flea for "boring" things like watching a hook in the water my prospects aren't great. I am just hoping that at some point we are able to land one fish so he can see how it's done.
I hope everyone has a great weekend and I hope to have some pictures to share next week. Pray for no rain!

Worst Person of the Week 7/13/10

OK, we are going to start a new feature here at YJKOBT called the Worst Person of the Week. This new feature (with apologies to Keith Olbermann) will allow the readers of this blog to vote and decide which current news maker/celebrity is the worst person of the week. Hopefully you will enjoy.

This weeks nominees are as follows:

MEL GIBSON - Mel is nominated this week because he seems to have found himself in a dispute with his baby momma in which he launches into a racist, domestic assault filled, threat laced tirade that she catches on tape.

LINDSAY LOHAN - Miss Lohan finds herself a nominee because she continues to behave like a juvenile and has been sentenced to jail for breaking her parole. Her response? Drawing F-You to the judge on her fingernails.

ANNA CHAPMAN - She may look good but this vixen is actually a spy for Mother Russia and this past week she was captured but deftly managed to allude punishment. She was deported back to Russia but I have a funny feeling we will hear from her again.

LEBRON JAMES - Oh yes, Last but not least the scourge of the earth Lebron James makes the list for 2 reasons. First because he dared to leave Cleveland in the lurch and second for the cold hearted way that he did it. Anytime a hometown hero gets his jersey burned in effigy he deserves a not for worst person of the week.

There are the nominees. Please give me your thoughts. Which is the worst person and why? Comments and lively debate are always welcome here at YJKOBT. Please also vote in the poll which will be open for a few days so we can crown this weeks Worst Person!

Weekend and an Old Watch

We had a pretty good weekend that included among other things repainting the entire downstairs and upstairs hall of our house. Now don't get me wrong I didn't do any of the painting. I spent the day with my son out of the house keeping him away from the paint while my wife, sister, parents, and sister's boyfriend did the hard work. The house looks great and I had my fill of Chic-Fil-A seeing as my son wanted to play in their play area for hour upon hour.
I also had a semi-revelation on Saturday. I realized that one of the reasons I don't have as much to blog about is that I tweet pretty much everything that is going on. Now I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing I just need to remember to hold back a thing or two so I can have something to blog about. Pretty smart huh? I had something on Saturday that I really wanted to tweet about but I saved it. So here goes.
One of the things I wanted to get done while I had some time with my son on Saturday was take him to Bass Pro Shop so he could pick out his very first sleeping bag. We are going camping this coming weekend, you know roughing it with tents and campfires and stuff and we needed to pick up some new gear. I went up in the attic to check for sleeping bags and could only find one not two. This called for a more thorough search and while I didn't find the missing sleeping bag I did locate something that I thought I had lost years ago. My airplane pilots watch!
How sweet is this? It was in the bottom of my old college trunk up in the attic and I know I haven't seen or worn it in at least 10 years! The battery was dead of course (probably the reason it ended up in the trunk in the first place) but bonus, we were heading to the mall and I could get a new battery installed. I did and check it out, it's like my old watch is now my new watch. I'm wearing it right now!
Have you ever found something like this that you had forgotten you had and it was like brand knew when you did? Tell me about it...

How do you determine the greater good?

Many of you know that I have always been fascinated by serial killers or more precisely the police work and investigations that go into tracking them down. This week I was interested to read about how the LAPD has finally tracked down and arrested a suspect they believe is the "Grim Sleeper" who was an active serial killer in South Los Angeles for 25 years.
This comes as great news to the families of the victims of this predator as well as the community as a whole however the arrest has prompted a debate about the tactics used to track down Lonnie D. Franklin Jr. the accused. The police were led to him by what is known as a familial DNA search. Broken down simply this is what happened. Police had DNA evidence linking the killings together but no suspect to match it too. What they did was initiate DNA searches of prisoners in the California penal system who had similar DNA to the suspect not exact matches. Lonnie Franklin's son Christopher was incarcerated and they were able to match a partial DNA profile from him. This led them to his
father the suspect. From there they tailed him and gained a sample of his DNA from a discarded pizza crust and found it was a match to the profile of The Grim Sleeper.
Pretty neat stuff huh? The police think it is. They are touting that "It is the first time an active familial search has been used to solve a homicide case in the United States". I thought so too until I started thinking a little bit more about it. There is just something that strikes the civil libertarian part of me wrong about a DNA database of families DNA that can be compared to others. Where does this database end? What lengths will it be used for? Sure catching a serial killer serves the greater good but what if the DNA database starts being used to track down other types of crimes? What about rape? Yes that probably serves the greater good but where does it stop? Is auto theft a crime that we are willing to search DNA databases to solve? How about shoplifting, or failing to pay child support?
I guess my concern about the whole process is how it will be used and who may get caught up in the process. This seems very "Big Brother-ish" to me and I worry about overzealous police relying too much on DNA and not on old fashioned police work. What happens someday when someone is set free because some slick lawyer gets the right judge to make a ruling and where would that leave other cases using the same techniques? I'm happy that potentially the Grim Sleeper is off the streets but sure am concerned about all the questions it raises. I wonder what you all think?

So Uninspired These Days

Judging from a lot of what I have read recently it seems there is a huge case of un-inspiration going on around here. There are a lot of hiatus, on break, or just plain packed up and shut down blogs that I have seen and I am not sure if this disease is contagious or not.

If it is then I seem to have caught it. Where are the fresh ideas? Why is nothing as funny as usual? Why is the World Cup no where near as blog worthy as The Olympics were? Is it just a summertime lull or has this blogging thing past it's prime? Why can't football season hurry up and get here?

I have no answers only questions.

Quite Possibly the Yummiest thing Ever.

In a match that could only be made in heaven (Or North Carolina where both of these products were originally created) I think I have found what may just be the yummiest thing ever. Cheerwine filled Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Yes even though it may put me into a sugar coma I can never fully recover from I think that I will have to try this new treat in the very near future.

For those of you not familiar with Cheerwine, it is a wonderful sparking cherry-ish soda that was invented in Salisbury, NC where I grew up which is teaming itself up with Winston-Salem based Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I will have to report back once I have had one as to exactly how blissfully excellent it is, but I must apologize to you in advance that unless you live in North or South Carolina you won't be able to try this delicious treat because they are apparently only making it available in just this area.

I found a picture of one of these things and figured I would share with you...

Just another wonderful reason that I live in the best place on earth, North Carolina. Thank you for letting me share with you all.
