Something is Fishy about this Story

I saw this story here locally and figured I would share because I find it amusing. Meet David Hayes of Wilkes county, NC who just caught himself a state record channel catfish that weighed over 21 pounds. Now you might say that there is nothing really odd about this (especially in Wilkes County) however this story has a bit of a twist. Call it a Barbie twist if you will. You see it seems that David was fishing along with his three year old granddaughter who was using her Barbie fishing rod. Who knew they even made such a thing? Well the granddaughter asked him to hold her rod and then BAM! The catfish hits and David spends the next 25 minutes trying to reel in this monster fish which turns out to be almost 3 pounds larger than the previous record.
Does anyone else think this is fishy? First of all what kind of fishing line are they rigging on Barbie fishing poles these days that they could handle such a fish? Second how on earth was he able to land that thing without breaking the pole. I don't know how many of you have caught large fish but they put up a heck of a fight. There are regular bass rods out there that the fish would have broken in two. I think this guy was just trying to get some publicity for his state record. It's interesting alright but I am calling this one a tall fish tale. What do you think?

***UPDATE***

It seems that Mattel has gotten involved in this and is sending the little girl a new Barbie fishing rod and the grandfather a set of Barbie golf clubs...

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1187137.html

BTW - this updated article states that the last record catfish had to be caught with a deep sea fishing rod and 100 pound test fishing line... I am now even more convinced this is a hoax like that Bigfoot story.

I don't know...usually 'fish stories' would be more about the size of the fish. He obviously caught the sucker...maybe it's true that the Barbie rod reeled the fish in. Stranger things have happened...!

Doc, I think you should go purchase a pretty pink Barbie fishing rod and test the theory. Who knows, you might catch somethin' good...and look pretty doing it! LOL!

I once ate a live goldfish and then played with Barbie - does that count??

Sounds pretty fishy to me. That is a big 'ole bunch of crap! But Mattel should pay him for advertising!

And I would be mean about the other "big sizes" in this picture, but I won't. I'm not feeling mean today.

When I first started reading I was hoping he caught the fish WITH a barbie. Now that would be cool.

Maybe the fish was blinded by the bright pink rod and while convulsing the huge man tackled it.

LOL, Knight...you may be right!!

My in-laws gave Patrick a toy fishing pole like this Barbie one. Maybe I should have tried it because I didn't catch anything on our fishing trip this year.

Yeah right... Its a hoax!

Doc - give it a shot next time you're out and let us know. Maybe the kid rods are more durable cuz well, they're kids!

Could you imagine?? That would start a whole new trend...LOL!

Aren't those pics at the bottom of your blog page?

I loved going fishing w/ my dad when I was younger...haven't been in a long time. The best was when I went deep sea salmon fishing in the Pacific...I caught the biggest fish on the boat, too!!

...and I used to catch tons of fluke off the Jersey shore.

I once knew a hooker named Minnie Mazzola.

Anyone know what movIe that line was from? DON'T SAY IT DOC!

Doc said...

Most everyone should know what movie that is from....

The Mountain Cat said...

Leap O' Faith got it.

Doc I think you and have seen that movie more than any other.

Yeah, if I hadn't seen the movie again recently, I never would've guessed.

I have seen a bunch of movies more that that one... Remeber I used to work as a projectionist... I had to see movies over and over again for weeks.

I think the fish just ate a hubcap and some beer bottles from the bottom of the lake. He didn't have any fight left in him after that.

Either that or it is a HOAX!!

I was thinking like karitag. I thought the granddaughter was playing with her Barbie and the fish started nibbling on Barbie's toes.

Hi Disaster Chick. Welcome to our party.

I'm thinking that is one ugly fishie!

I call shenanigans!

As soon as that big old catfish hit that line and rolled over it would have ripped the live right out of that little reel. There's no way the reel stands up to that.

In other news the same guy claims to have won the Paris to Dakar Rally driving his granddaughter Barbie Jeep.

In still further news that granddaughter is seriously spoiled.

We have a few Barbie and Disney fishing poles. If I remember right, they have the same fishing line as any other simple fishing pole you could grab at Wally World.

The size and stability to pull in that size of fish....hmmmm, not so sure but we've never caught anything very big on the girls' fishing poles.

Barbie was busy using Kens pole!!!

Hehehehe!!

I had a Micky Mouse fishing pole when I was a kid and I think I caught a few spider crabs using hot dogs for bait.

Those were good times.

I had a 6lb rainbow trout bend a normal rod all the way over.

Yeah sounds fishy.

I saw that myself. Looks as if he's trying to rip a big old fart from his expression.
