Thursday Random Thoughts 7/24/2008

Stuff I have been thinking about:

-Am I the only one who isn't really all that excited about the Olympics?

-Speaking of China and the Olympics. I heard on the news this past weekend that China recently decided to tell drivers who could and who couldn't drive to control pollution during the games. Ummmm why don't y'all try that trick the rest of the year too. China your pollution sucks.

-Odd or interesting search note of the week. Someone from the Ukraine found out blog by searching the rock group Trixter... I bet they are glad they didn't go to Rocklahoma either!

-Madame Tussaud's of London unveiled the Amy Winehouse statue yesterday as seen here to the left. Anyone else not able to tell the difference between the real and the wax Winehouse?

-I heard on the radio the other day that there is actually a bank manager that as a part of the plan if the branch gets robbed keeps trash bags and playing cards in the bank vault at all times. If the employees are forced to strip and get in the vault during a robbery they have trash bags to dress with and they can play cards to pass the time until the police open the vault. Now talk about preparing ahead of time for the worst case scenario!

-If you have ever had a teenager come to your door and try and sell you a magazine subscription by saying they are trying to earn money for college or some similar story you have to read this article by Craig Malisow from the Houston Press. It is a terrible tale of how magazine clearing houses lure troubled teens into driving across country with the promise of money and travel only to teach them to lie for sales, treat them like slaves, give them very little money, and keep them in service by having independent managers give them drugs and alcohol. It's a really terrible situation that the publishers they sell for refuse to accept any responsibility for especially when these kids are killed or commit crimes against those they are trying to sell to. Please read the article when you get a chance and never NEVER buy magazines from a door to door person who you do not personally know. Here is another article from the NY Times about the same thing. It's just a terrible situation.

-According to this article on charlotte.com Rudy Giuliani's son Andrew is suing Duke University saying he was wrongfully kicked off the golf team. Apparently Duke is cutting the size if it's golf team in half and he was one of the ones cut. This is the best part: "The lawsuit claims the coach ruined Giuliani's dream of becoming a professional golfer." BWWAHAHAHAHAA! This is the same kid that was all over the press in 1994 for running around the stage and pumping his fist while Giuliani was trying to give a speech for his inauguration! Good Grief destroying his dream of being a professional golfer. He ought to just feel lucky he got into Duke. That was probably a favor to his dad though.

-This week's Tuesday word game made the Enduring Legacy website which is operated by the people who are behind the whole movement to name that sewage treatment center after W. It made it under the blogosphere links to site.

-Anyone notice that you haven't heard much about the Tour De France this year? Kind of funny that when an American isn't in contention that you don't hear that much about it. Can anyone name the leader without looking it up? I sure can't.

-It looks like the poll is pretty decisive that we need to take a new picture of Doc and the Mt. Cat for our blog. I wish we could go to Lincoln center as several have suggested but it's not in the cards for this trip. We are going to have to take it at Shea stadium. There is a little bonus. We may have a fellow US people blogger that meets us there... Plus I heard from another US people blogger yesterday who may be swinging through NC on a trip this summer and wants to hang out! I think getting to meet other bloggers will be so much fun!

-Sorry to have such a short list of random thoughts this week but I have a lot going on in my little world right now and my head is kind of cluttered. I really need that vacation coming up next week.

-Doc

I'm not going to Madame Tussaud's baby, I said no, no, no.

Vin, There are other pictures that have her parents actually posing with the wax figure... Hilarious!

I am pretty sure that Giuliani's son doesn't speak to his dad. He sided with mom in the whole divorce thing and there is bad blood. I saw something on tv when Rudy was still in presidential race where the son was quoted as saying he would actively campaign against his dad.

Um, I think the wax Winehouse looks BETTER than the real one. Did you read that story in Rolling Stone about her and how cracked out she is? Sad. They have a good one about China, too, and how they are destroying any semblance of a right to privacy (did they have one to begin with?) using technology exported by US Companies despite the fact that we are BANNED FROM EXPORTING SUCH TECHNOLOGY after Tiananman Square...stepping off my soapbox now...

I'm with Karitag. I saw the picture and was all "holy crap, she looks better!"

Is this an Olympic year?

Doc said...

Karen and KaritaG... Seeing as we have you two esteemeed members of the bar who read YJKOBT on a regular basis (and I have both of you on retainer) do you see any way of this Giuliani lawsuit being worth anything just on face value?? If so then I need to sue my college for killing my dream of being a Pro football player.

Wow Doc, The Tour de France hmmmm that gives me an idea for something to blog about

Doc said...

Aunt Becky... I am with you!

ROTFL @ Jennifer and TMC for different reasons...

Doc said...

G... you better hope the pool water for ole Michael Phelps isn't all polluted with chemicals and industrial waste or he will get more than just shrinkage :o

Hmmmm Doc, Gee I wonder if there are other bicylce races going on in the world? I wonder if there is a website somewhere that lists these races? (Foreboding)

I am not sure about the Duke case, I would have to actually read what the claims are.

An interesting side fact....but I the first time I was published was in a legal journal where I wrote about Brian Fortay's suit against Miami.

I say the Giuliani thing is for publicity and am guessing it will be dismissed um, yesterday, once it starts being briefed (if it even reaches that stage).

WNG - the spying thing creeped me out too, though not as much as the part about IBM, Honeywell, General Electric, and L-1 providing them with the resources to DO IT...

Doc said...

You are funny Vin... (but I think it's foreshaddowing instead of forbodding)

Dadgum, Karen had to go and get all lawyerly on me... LOL!

KaritaG said...

An interesting side fact - the first time I was published was an article re: the impact of Canada's decriminalization of marijuana on their US trade relationship, LOL. I guess that doesn't make me an expert on sports law, huh?!

Doc said...

I think you are on to something KaritaG. Publicity and possibly piling on. Duke has had some big time lawsuit settlements involving athletes inteh past year or so.

Karen said...

LOL...karitag, I love how you and I really tackled those burning legal issues. Marijuana and college football. LOL

KaritaG said...

I mean, it's completely wrong, but he might be thinking Duke will just pay him off to avoid any more negative press at this point...and he will get some press, period, out of the deal?

Karen said...

Apparently it is a breach of contract case - quite similar to the Fortay situation.

KaritaG said...

Karen - right?! Isn't it crazy the things journals will publish?! I can promise you that one has bitten me in the ass at at least one interview...

An interesting side fact: YJKOBT has the most scholarly and fun readership on the whole blogosphere!!

My thought exactly... 'cause I am betting he ain't any Tiger Woods.

Correct me if I am wrong, I don't think golf has the draft system where exposure in college is important. If he is just looking for practice and coaching - hire a golf pro. His family has money.

Doc said...

You are right Karen... Golf is a sport where each athlete (questionable term there) is in essence self employed - To make the PGA tour you have to qualify through a series of tournaments

G... If I am off the water polo team can we at least play Marco Polo?

Hey, remember Office Space? The guy that knocked on the door selling magazines? THAT was funny!
But no, I NEVER buy from those people, and they are PERSISTANT!

Ya know, some people will sue over ANYTHING!

Holy Crap! Your site made it! That is too cool.

Okay, I have heard a LOT about the Tour De France cause my husband watches it every day when we get home. It's the ONLY thing he watches. And yea, sometimes I get in to it to. It fascinates me. But no, I don't know the leader right now.

Vacation next week? Are we still doing the thing on Wednesday?

Yep - the only YJKOBT that thing that will be on vacation for the next 2 weeks is Tuesday word game. We will be around though and TMC is pumped up about Weird Al Wednesday for song parodies.

Ken said...

Is that the...."The Weird Al Wednesday Yank" for song parodies?

Ken said...

Doc, If we come that way we'll most likely stay in Statesville. It's right on 70. How far to a good meeting place.

Wait. I wonder if I can sue my Universtiy for this MRS. degree that I obtained. Now THAT would open a whole new can of worms and the Divorce lawyers would dance with glee.

*being snarky cause I am happily married*

*finger waves* HI HONEY! (just in case, you know?)

WEIRD AL WEDNESDAYS! That is truely inpsired. LOVE the old Yankovik.

Mic... Probably Mooresville (Race City USA)

WNG - I KNOW!! That's the main reason I am so bugged. I'm thinking, not only is this illegal, but I can't think of a good reason why they would be sending equipment over for cheap R&D and prototype testing unless they wanted to eventually bring it back...

I am not interested in the olympics this year, either. And, the only time I've seen anything about the Tour de France is when they have kicked one of the competitors (usually in first place) out for failing the drug test.

I've been busy the past couple of days, so I don't know who is in the lead of the Tour this moment. However, as of the end of last week, it was Cadel Evans. Christian Vandevelde (USA) was in the top 7; Mark Cavendish from England has been a monster on the sprints. I really wanted to see Stage 17 yesterday; L'Alpe-d'Huez is always a grueling mountain climb and entertaining to watch. Whoever is the leader out of the mountains usually wins.

Okay, now I've looked it up. Carlos Sastre won Stage 17 and has taken the yellow jersey as of Stage 18. With two flat stages and a time trial, it will be tough for Vandevelde to overtake an almost 5 minute deficit.

(I use to be a road cyclist in high school and beginning of college...too much beer ended that!)
