What's in a name ?

I hope that everyone had a great long weekend. I know that we did over at the Doc household. We hung out all weekend and yes I even got that picture of the jets over my house I promised earlier. Look for it on Thursday during Random thoughts.
Thank you all for your great poll ideas. I now have several good one to ask in coming weeks however this weeks poll idea comes to us from my pal and yours Lulita. She wanted to know if you like the name your parents gave you. It's an interesting idea. The poll question is simple. Yes or No, do you like your name? Even though the poll question is simple I am sure this group has some discussion that can go on about it as well. What do you think?

My name has always been a sore spot for me because it's one of those "gender neutral" names. I was the subject of many comments like, "Wow! I've never known a girl with that name." Seems the name has shifted a bit and now is more feminine than masculine ... but still ...

I have never been a huge fan of Karen, but it has always been better than the Polish version of my name. I was always Karen at school, but always "Karanka" everywhere else. Over time I wore down everyone but my grandparents and Karen prevailed.

As as adult I wouldn't mind the more exotic version, but as a kid it was not fun.

I always hated my name as a kid because everyone would always mispronounce it. My mom refused to let anyone call me by a nickname (Leigh) (Lee) (Ann) and I don't have a middle name to go by.

But now that I'm older and have taken control of my own name (LOL) my husband and his family all call me "Leigh" and a few of my friends call me "Leigh". My mom still hates it, but I no longer care what she thinks *smile*

I even used "Leigh" in my oldest daughters name "Kayleigh".

The name I was given is not Lulita. That there is my bloggin' name. I like my given name enough it is common except for the way my Mom spelled it. So I have to spell it out every time I give it out or just deal with the incorrect spelling.

Karen, I rather like the Polish version.

With my name I went with the stardard abriviation while younger and then at a new job I took, I went by the long version, just to hear it. Now I'm back to the abriviated name.

I've known both a male and female "Dana" although IMO "Dana" is more feminine than masculine.

My husband doesn't go by his given name, he's gone by a gender neutral nickname since the day he was born and it does NOT fit him AT ALL.

I tend to just call him "J" most of the time.

Karen, I rather like the Polish version.

I like the Polish version too!

I've never associated "Dana" with a man either. My middle name is about as commn as my first. Hubby's name is as common as mine on the male side. We are peas in a pod he and I.

I like leighann. I can see why it was always misspelled.

My Mom didn't have a problem with using the abriviated version of my name. She saved the long version for when I was in trouble, I heard it often enough believe me, HA!

I've never liked my name and it always annoyed me that there was an extra 'n' in it, I'm always having to spell it out. In grade school the nuns used to yell at me if I spelled it correctly, they told me the exra 'n' was wrong. Sadistic bitches - yeah I said it!

I always wanted to be named after my Nana - her name was Eva although half the family called her Ava.

I think Dana is def a feminine name. I love the Polish version of Karen and well - as for Leighann - I just call her Goddess! - with two d's.

I have always disliked my name because everyone assumes I am a male! Male spelling is Leslie..
Mine is Lesley, which is the girls version.

I was named after my Great Grandfather... That did not sit well with me as a kid, knowing that my parents were going to call me Lesley regardless of being female or male...

At my last Gyno appointment the lady dr was confused and thought that a guy was going to see her...hence my name!

I like all of your names... :-) but I guess my name is who I am..

Good choice of Poll! Thanks LU

oh, and thanks Doc can't wait to see some pics.

Lu' said...

Dianne, how could the nuns do that, that sucks. My sister is the single "n" version.

Lesley, I've never associated your name with a man, either way you spell it, hmmm.

Anyone remember Dana Andrews?? That's the reference I used to always hear ...

Anonymous said...

No I have not Dana I've only ever known 1 Dana and she was really nice... Who is Dana Andrews.. An author maybe?

Lu' said...

At least he is a good actor. The Dana we know should be an author don't you think? I would tend to think of it as a man having a womans name, same for Leslie and Carrol. Now Sidney I think of as a mans name, but some women have that name too. The only man that had my name was the unlucky boy in the Johnny cash song.

I have always liked my name. I even wrote a whole posting on it here

Well, atleast none of us are called Apple or Pixie... Please no one be called either of them... only because I wouldn't want to offend all the apples or Pixie's

Robin I read your post..lol... and so you should like your name... It's pretty..

Lu' said...

Nicely done post Robin. I know two guys named Robin, fellow trap shooters. I've always thought they had a girls name? One goes by Rob and the other goes by Robin. It's funny, the one going by Rob isn't suited to Robin and the one going by Robin isn't suited to Rob.

Good night everyone... I hope you all have a great day...

I like my name now. But as a kid I didn't always - it's long, very italian, and never fit in those grid boxes on school testing. Christine Josephine Marie. I kinda wanted to be called "CJ" but no one ever picked that up. Or Chrissy Jo? No, hate that one. I'm a city girl and that's too Jessica Simpson-esk.

It's a wonder I have any confidence at all. I had dark, bushy eyebrows and a deep voice. The boys called me Louie Armstrong for heaven's sake!

My real name is Apple, Lesley. :...(

Mine is pretty good... I like it ok.

CJ, HA! boys can be so cruel. It's only fitting I guess because men can be heartless. I like CJ, noone calls you that?

I am a firm believer in that what you name your child is of extreme importance and should have some sort of meaning behind it since they will carry it with them the rest of their lives and names tend to define us.

I always hated my name. I didn't feel it fit who I was because it is so very plain. Althought the meaning of it is not. I once tried to do an unusual spelling in the 5th grade and that produced even more ridecule. Now that I am older I still don't like my name but I think the meaning of it fits me.

I have only known female Dana's.

You have a beautiful name Lu...it makes me think of sunshine.

I knew one male Leslie but others have had the male spelling. Maybe it's an American thing?

I like your name Leighann. Although when I first met a person with it spelled that way I didn't know how to pronounce it either!

As American as Apple Pie said...

Robin--that's pretty cool! I probably can't come up with more than 1. It was a hit song by Jefferson Starship in the 80s and makes me cringe to this day when people sing it to me.

I changed my name when I went to college. My name is Jessica Dawn and growing up I went by Dawn. HATED IT!! So when I moved to a different town I just decided not to correct anyone, lol. My family still calls me Dawn but, I don't even answer to it so if they need me in a store they have learned to call out Jessica!

Lu' said...

I have never met anyone named Apple or knew of anyone until GP's duaghter. What was the different way of spelling it you came up with?

Mine is actually Susanne, Sue, Susie, Susie-Q. I used to correct people when refered to as Susan. MY NAME IS NOT SUSAN. I'm OK with that now. When I was growing up I had a neighbor named Susan and apparently I didn't like the comparison:)

My real name isn't Apple, I was just picking on Lesley for her comment. I left a clue as to my real name on my comment to Robin.

Doc said...

I call her Apple... LOL

I have to side with those who have a unisex name. I don't think I would like it very well. I have had a couple of issues with my daughter with her name being Taylor. Many do not understand that she is a girl they always assume that she is a boy. I am fairly happy with my own name though.

Leighann- I did mess up the spelling of your name until I had some practice at it!

I love my name. "Carly Knight" It's simple but strong on it's own. Good job mom and dad. They don't have any reason for coming up with Carly. They were not Carly Simon fans but I think that is where they got the idea. Lame story right? My brother hates his name. Guess you can't win them all.

Karen said...

AAAP - I think I figured out what your name is through the clue. And I feel you on the cringing.

I cringe everytime anyone quotes Goodfella (one of my favorite movies by the way). There is a lot of "Karen!!" in that movie.

Originally I hated my name...Penelope. As a child people never pronounced it correctly and it was just so long, so I went by Penny. Then I grew into my full name, and by high school I was asking people to call me Penelope. People still mispronounce it, it does not rhyme with canteloupe people, but I can tolerate that.
