Thursday Random Thoughts 5/29/2008

Stuff I have been thinking about:

- I forgot to mention last week that we used some of our "Economic Stimulus" check to get a new lawn mower. OK we did our part to help the economy. Oh and the lawn mower is sweet! I am so glad to get rid of the self-propelled mower that I was using because it was hurting my back. I am happy to have a push mower again.

-I keep having the funny feeling that we have gone too long without a real major news story. When I say major I mean MAJOR. I have a bad feeling that we are due for one soon.

-I was flipping stations on the radio in my car yesterday morning and caught a little bit of the John Boy and Billy show. They were doing a parody song of the Oak Ridge Boys' 'Elvira.' It was called 'Obama' and oh my gosh it was hilarious. I can't remember all of it but the hook was, "to get rid of Chelsea's Mama, go Obama. Yeaaah!" LOL!

-OK, here is the wrap up on "The longest Day of the year." It was a big success. My wife, son, and I discovered that Radio Margaritaville was running replays of live Buffett concerts all weekend long so we hung out on the back deck listening to Brother Jimmy on the SAT radio and chilling with a few Landsharks. (Jimmy Buffett's own beer - I think it's better than Corona) We had some friends come over to pitch horseshoes, watch the race, and grill out. The menu included: chips & dip, grilled flank steak, buffalo chicken bites, BBQ chicken, shrimp kabobs, vegetable kabobs, twice baked potatoes, and other yummy stuff. It was great and yes as promised here are the pictures of the jets flying over our house during the pre-race fly over. (For some reason it won't let you click on them for close ups)

-The most classic line of this past weekend was by one of my wife's good friends. On Monday we went to a cook out at their house and they have a two year old who is becoming quite demanding or "high maintenance" as she calls him. In addition to other things he apparently has to have all of his food cut up in just the proper way. At one point mom was heard to say in exasperation, "Son, I am NOT cutting up Cool-Whip" I couldn't help it I had to bust out laughing.

-Did you know that gasoline is only twelve cents a gallon in Venezuela?

-When you get some time I want to you check out ...And the pursuit of Happiness. It's a good blog read of course but the reason I am highlighting it here is that she is going to be having a "Guess that tattoo" contest next week starting Monday I think. Check it out!

-What is the most embarrassing song that you really like? I will admit to mine. I love the Backstreet Boys song "I want it that way." My wife makes fun of me for it but I don't care.

-Did ya'll hear that the toilet on the International Space station is clogged up and they are having to rush supplies up there on the space shuttle to fix it? Does a certain scene from National Lampoon's Christmas vacation pop into any one's mind? LOL

-I read the other day that scientists are trying to come up with more environmentally friendly bombs. What the hell? yeah you read that right. Bombs that are more environmentally friendly. Look here if you are dropping a bomb on something you sure as heck aren't worried about it's condition after you blow it to smithereens. I wonder what they are going to call these things. Green bombs would be my guess. Yeesh.

My Favorite Movies

Good afternoon. This is a hard list to come up with. Below are 25 of my favorites films. However, it is difficult to come up the correct order. I've probably seen Goodfellas more than any other film in my life but I love many others on the list just the same. I've memorized a lot of the dialogue from many of these films as well. And I probably forgot to include a lot of films too. What are your favorites?

Here is my list:

1. Goodfellas

2. Godfather
3. Godfather 2
4. The French Connection
5. This is Spinal Tap
6. Annie Hall
7. Usual Suspects
8.Pulp Fiction
9. Citizen Kane
10 Taxi Driver
11. Fargo
12. Midnight Cowboy

13. Casablanca
14. Se7en
15. Dr. Strangelove
16. Sweet Smell of Success
17. Some Like It Hot
18. Double Indemnity

W-w-w-w-w-Wednesday Would You Rather

Now that Dancing with the Stars is over I'm hosting a new topic called "Would You Rather...". Each week you will be given a choice of two things. They may be related, they may not. Choose whichever one you would rather be/do/say, etc and give your reason.

Soooooo...Would You Rather...

Tuesday Word Game winner

Thank you to all my peeps who weren't hung over or asleep and played Tuesday word game yesterday. This weeks winner was tough to choose as always. Leighann and Lu were on fire as usual. I went back and read and the entry that got me laughing the most was from an anonymous commenter named "Cammy". Now I am pretty sure I know who this person is and think that she would make an excellent blogger because she is certainly "US People" Cammy's comment was the following Brittney Spears based quip:

Odd Louisiana Laws . . . In the town of Kentwood, unless impaired or infirmed, it is illegal to stay in a seated position during the playing of "Oops, I did it Again."

Now like I said, I am only guessing at who this "Cammy" is but I bet that I am right. Please come and get your peach Cammy and please create a blog so you will have some place to display it properly:

Tuesday Word Game 5/27/2008

Believe it or not it's already Tuesday again. That means word game time kiddies. I figured it has been a little while since we dealt with either weird laws or the State of Louisiana so lets go there this week. Give this article a read because it involves both! I am quite sure that our crew can come up with some other odd laws that could possibly be on the books in Louisiana. I have heard that New Orleans has it's own set of laws anyway. Complete the following news article with an off the wall law:

HOUMA, La. - Police in this town wouldn't cut a break for a barber who ran afoul of an obscure law barring him from working Sundays and Mondays.
Clyde Scott had opened his shop May 19 just to trim up a few students getting ready for their graduation ceremony when an officer gave him a citation.
A law on the books in Houma for decades bars barbers from working Sundays, Mondays, any of several holidays and even the day after Labor Day.
"I didn't know it existed," said Scott, 32, who has owned Clippas barbershop for about two years. "It's crazy."

Other odd laws in Louisiana include __________________ .

As always answer as often as you like in the form of a comment and the best answer wins a "Peach" tomorrow morning.

What's in a name ?

I hope that everyone had a great long weekend. I know that we did over at the Doc household. We hung out all weekend and yes I even got that picture of the jets over my house I promised earlier. Look for it on Thursday during Random thoughts.
Thank you all for your great poll ideas. I now have several good one to ask in coming weeks however this weeks poll idea comes to us from my pal and yours Lulita. She wanted to know if you like the name your parents gave you. It's an interesting idea. The poll question is simple. Yes or No, do you like your name? Even though the poll question is simple I am sure this group has some discussion that can go on about it as well. What do you think?
