Weekly Poll: Speeding Tickets

On my way back from New York last month I was pulled over for speeding (in a construction zone) and given a speeding ticket. Now I'm 38 years old and have been driving since I was 16 and this is the first speeding ticket I have ever gotten. I'm not a huge speeder, I usually just follow the flow of traffic (or 5-7 mph over) depending on the traffic but I guess I have been lucky not to have been stopped before.
This Friday I am going to court to try and plead this ticket down to keep from having our insurance go sky high. I was talking about this with someone last week who was very surprised that this was my first speeding ticket. She says that she not only has multiple tickets but has been stopped many more times and just given warnings. (Due to flirting with the officer and batting her eyes no doubt)
This got me to thinking. Is it rare that I have been driving for over 20 years and never been given a ticket prior to this? I figured I would make a poll and ask for your comments. Have you been pulled over and given a ticket? Multiple tickets? Have you gotten off with just a warning? Tell us the stories. Let us know....

Weekly Poll - How Safe do you Feel?

After reading about the failed bombing attempt in Times Square, New York City this past Saturday night I got to thinking about how safe we are. Even though the memories are fresh a lot of time has past since both the Oklahoma City bombing and the attacks on September 11, 2001. It's obvious that there are still threats out there to our safety.
How safe do you feel? Not just when you are visiting a place like New York but where you live now? I know that New York is a target and people think "It couldn't happen where I live" but sadly I think that terrorists could do more damage in a small community where people feel "safe."
I'm guilty of feeling the same way. No way, something like that happens in New York or Los Angeles not in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Please take a moment to vote in the poll and feel free to comment as you wish. How safe do you feel?

Weekly Poll 3/1/10 What kind of TV reception do you use?

As I sit here this morning working from home and waiting for the DirecTV man to come and realign our dish it not only reminded me of this famous tirade post about terrible customer service from DirecTV but it also gave the the idea for this weeks poll.

How do you get TV reception at your home? Do you use satellite dish reception or Cable? We have been pretty much happy with direcTV other than the previously referenced post. (give it a read it's a beaut) Do you use Cable? regular, HiDef or digital? Or do you get broadcast channels over the air? Maybe you just use a PC or some other method.

Take a minute to vote in the poll and as always any comments are welcomed.

Weekly Poll 2/22/10 - The Tiger Situation

After this past Friday's apology heard around the world what is your feeling on the state of the Tiger situation?
Tiger in very awkward fashion came out on Friday and admitted to the world what he has done and apologized to everyone for everything. After getting to watch replay of it and reading the text I have a feeling this was not the way he wanted to do this but his 'rehab' may have mandated it. He read from a prepared speech and did not come off as being totally sincere but he is awkward in this way normally. Apparently he is back to rehab and his golf career is on hold.
What is your opinion of this mess? I have a poll up that has a bunch of different choices and you can select multiple answers. Would love to hear your comments as well.

Weekly Poll - Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics in Vancouver kicked off in grand fashion this weekend and the craze it on. It seems to me that most of these "winter" sports like luge, skiing, and figure skating only catch our interest every 4 years when there is National Pride on the line. It may just be NBC and their expert production but every four years it seems that I find myself rooting like hell for the poor guy from South Dakota whose parent passed away last year and whose sibling has a rare disease to compete in frozen pond gumball shooting or some other obscure sport. It's compelling even though I have no idea about some of the sports.
I wanted to take the pulse of blogger on this issue. Are you into the Winter Olympics? Has it hooked you in or could you care less? vote in the poll and let me know what you think.

Weekly Poll - So How you liking the weather?

Happy Monday to everyone! Judging from last weeks poll we have some Happy Saints fans after the Super Bowl yesterday. Now that it's over I wanted to ask a simple question this week. So how are you liking the weather so far this winter? Yeesh it's been pretty bad pretty much everywhere. Extra snow and ice and super cold temperatures all over the place. So go ahead and voice your opinion on the weather. Get it off your chest!
Of course if you enjoy the winter wonderland you can say so too... Poll will be up all week.

Who so you want to win the Super Bowl? Weekly Poll 2/1/10

Super Bowl week is here. A week full of hype and hyperbole. This years game should be a good one though. The Indianapolis Colts versus the New Orleans Saints this coming Sunday. Two teams that win games with their offense. The Colts are a 5 1/2 to 6 point favorite depending on where you look and the odds makers have the over under for the game at 56 1/2 so everyone is expecting a lot of scoring. Poll question for this week is who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl? Are you a fan of Peyton Manning and the Colts or the great team story of the Saints and the recovery they are helping to facilitate in New Orleans? Go ahead and tell me and vote in the poll. Who are you pulling for this Sunday? Poll will be open until kick off time on Sunday.

Weekly Poll - What do you think of Twitter?

Last week we discussed race relations and by the comments and the poll votes it seems that we are divided on where our country stands. This week's poll is a little bit of a lighter topic. Twitter!
Inspiration for this poll came from our friend Mrs. D who writes 3 Men & a Lady. (Give her blog a read. She is both funny and insightful.) Last week she said that she was not sure about Twitter because it can be confusing, however I got an email on Saturday saying that she was now following my Tweets. To be truthful Twitter can be confusing and if you don't know how to use it (a la the Mt. Cat) or an application that sorts your stream for you it's not worth a lot.
Poll question and topic for discussion is what do you think about Twitter? Is it great? Are you a full fledged Tweeter? Are you just a novice experimenting? Do you hate it? Do you find yourself having conversations in Twitter-speak with Hash tags and @ symbols? What say you? Please vote in the poll which will be up all week and comments below.

Weekly Poll - How are race Relations in America?

With a nod towards Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose birthday is celebrated as a holiday today I figured that this week's poll would be about race relations in America. How are we doing as a country? I know we have come a long way from the days of segregated bathrooms and denial of voters rights but where are we today?
I don't think that the election of an African-American as President means we have reached the end of the racism tension in America. I think maybe it has just galvanized the extreme edges of the debate. Within the past 3 months I have still heard someone in casual conversation using the 'n-word' in reference to our President. I have always been puzzled and disturbed by people's reaction to race and what I perceive as an emphasis on the things that divide us instead of the things we have in common. Anyone who has read here for years knows that. You can read previous posts on this here.
Tell me what you think of the state of race relations in our country. The poll question answers are this: We are moving on the right track and We have a long way to go but I would like to hear what you think about this topic as well. Let me know what you think.

So what do we call it? Weekly Poll 1/4/2010

OK, So the year 2010 is now here and apparently there is much debate about exactly what we are going to call this year. So Lets hear what you think. Should we refer to this year as Twenty- Ten or as Two Thousand Ten?
I'm not sure that I have a real preference at this point simply because I haven't thought about it that much but I am sure there are some strong opinions out there. I would love to hear them.
Please vote in the poll and comment as you wish.

-Doc

Oh and Two Thousand and Ten is not an option because that is just poor grammar...

Weekly Poll - New Years Eve

Hey everyone, It's almost New Years and this weeks poll seeks to find out how you celebrate. Do you go out to a huge party with friends? Do you go to a bar for a celebration? How about just watching the ball drop at home?
My wife and I have our annual tradition with a bunch of our friends that we get together and do a fondue three course dinner. Cheese appetizers, then the meats and veggies, and chocolate for dessert. For those of you who don't fondue this process takes so long that by the time we finish dinner its usually ball drop time!
So how do you celebrate on New Years Eve? Please vote in the poll and make any comments you wish.

Christmas Cartoons - Weekly Poll 12/14/2009

I'm continuing the holiday theme this week with the poll. Last week we found out that YJKOBT readers prefer artificial trees to real ones. Even though live trees made a late week comeback they were no match for the fake ones.
This weeks poll is about Christmas cartoon specials. I picked out what I think are the most popular and made the poll. Which is your favorite? Do you like Rudolph or Frosty? How about Charlie Brown? My personal favorite is the Grinch. Watched it on Tivo just last week with my son for the first time. I just love the sneaky Grinch and his little dog.
Which of these is your favorite? Please vote in the poll and of course comment and defend your choice. Let me know if there are any of your favorites out there that I have forgotten.

Christmas Trees - Weekly Poll 12/7/2009

Ho Ho Ho, the season is upon us. Like it or not Christmastime is here. Last week the poll topic was about travelling for the holidays and it seems that most folks plan on staying close to home this year for Christmas. This week I figured I would ask about Christmas Trees. We haven't gotten ours yet but will this weekend. Our family always gets a live tree (and I shudder to think what would happen to me if I dared mention an artificial one) but many folks choose to celebrate with a fake tree. Heck artificial trees are probably safer and are certainly "greener."
So what does your family use? Real live tree? Artificial? or something else all together? Vote in this weeks poll and make any comments/arguments below. Poll will be open all week.

Back from Thanksgiving + Weekly poll

I am back after a hectic but fun trip to NY for Thanksgiving. The driving was long but getting to see family and friends was great. I hope that all you guys had an equally great holiday weekend. I will do my best to get caught up on your blogs and post a few of my own. I certainly have a bunch of random thoughts I need to get caught up on.
As far as this weeks poll I figured I would ask whether or not you were planing to travel or stay home for the Christmas holiday. I know kinda lame but I am just happy that we get to stay home this Christmas! So Vote in the poll it will be up all week.

Weekly Poll 11/23/2009 - Thanksgiving pies

With this week being Thanksgiving (what a great holiday) I figured we would ask about your favorite Thanksgiving pie for dessert. What is it? Please take a second to vote in the poll and of course any comments that you have are welcome.

I will be travelling to New York for a mini vacation out on the North Fork tomorrow night so I may or may not be able to post as much since our schedule will be crazy. If I can't post then everyone have a great week and wonderful Thanksgiving with your families. Hopefully I can come up with a Thanksgiving Random thoughts edition to post on Friday. That is the plan anyway.

Enjoy!

Weekly Poll 11/16/2009

This weeks poll is about your holiday shopping. Christmas is just around the corner and if you are like me and haven't bought a single gift yet then you probably better get to it. what kind of holiday shopper are you? Are you the kind who had it all done back in July like my mom used to do or do you wait until the absolute last second to get it done under the gun? Maybe you are one of those who fights the crowds the day after Thanksgiving when the season officially begins.... Well guess what Thanksgiving is next weekfolks.
Vote in the poll and of course make any comments you like.

Weekly Poll

This week we are checking back to a poll that we put up about 6 months ago. Now that we are through the conventions and in the home stretch of the election I want to check to see who you think will win the Presidential election. This is NOT who you specifically want to win the election but who you think will win. Obama or McCain? What say you?

Weekly Poll

I don't know about anyone else but I am really ready for football season. Let's get started already. College football starts this week and pro football next week. Lets kick it off. OK so this weeks poll is kind of lame but it's the best I can come up with.
Are you ready for some football?

Weekly Poll

So I was wondering now that we are half way thorough the Olympic games in Beijing how everyone is enjoying them. Before the games started I really had no interest in them, however as they have gone on my interest has picked up a bit. With nothing much else on TV I have been tuning in in the evenings to see what is going on. For sure the swimming and Michael Phelps story has added to the interest of the games for me but that is now over and I think that now I will still be watching to see if the US can beat China in the medal count and score more gold.
How about you? What do you think about the Olympics now that we are halfway through? What is your interest level? What events are you enjoying or are you still looking forward to?
