The few times I’ve gone fishing I enjoy the views, the breezes, the sunlight warming me, and maybe even reading in the fresh air – but when there’s a tug on the other end of that line I want someone else to do the dirty work. I can reel it in, but I don’t want to take it off the hook. The way it wriggles freaks me out. I’m afraid of killing it if it is one to toss back, and I really don’t want to be the one cleaning it. Like Gray had said – you should have the decency to eat it not just put it through agony for no reason. Dating is a lot like fishing.

I had to contact the guy I was dating because I knew he was feeling the spark and I wasn’t. I wanted to respect him more than the guys from my past that just vanished, and I also have a tendency to run into him. He is a great guy, but just not the guy for me. Some people made me feel like I’m a jerk for wanting the spark and not continuing to give him a chance. “You know, the spark doesn’t last” is the statement I heard the most. So here is my BBQ Grill of Love Theory – you must have a spark to start a flame to get the coals burning. Hopefully you put down a good foundation lava rock. Yes, the spark does die out, but you got a steady burn going and every now and then you will see a spark. If you were smart you had some coals in reserve so that the fire doesn’t completely die out.

I’ve had the spark once with someone I can never be with, and about once a year he tries to get it going again. I know that I must have a bigger draw to the guy I’m dating than with the fire juggler. His flame is only a illusion, but it is very convincing. I guess I would rather be a catch and release weenie than to play with fire when it involves someone’s heart.

2011 Already?!?!

Happy New Year to all of you! I hope that 2011 brings you much happiness. Many people use the changing of the calendar year to reflect on the previous year and make plans to improve their life. I’m not going to talk about resolutions. Majority of the people don’t keep the ones they make, so why bother? Besides this is already January 4th and many have already been broken?

It seems to me our society expects us to make resolutions that we won’t keep, and that seems like a huge waste of time. It seems like if we don’t live up to the expectations then we are a wasted life. I got many lectures about my seasonal attitude from a lady at work. My family decided not to “celebrate” Christmas with presents. Just a bit of background my family consists of my mother and me. We both go out and by what we need/want, and have way too much stuff. We did go to Christmas Vigil services and we also talked about those we loved that are no longer with us – it was nice. My family will never look like a Norman Rockwell painting, so why try to pretend that we are? If we do pretend that we are it will never feel right and should be stamped with a huge “FAIL”. I will admit there are a few more things that could be done to get into the holiday spirit. Overall we are doing our best to celebrate the meaning and not the commercialization. We also joined the other misfit toys at some casinos.

Now I feel like I’m being encountered with the idea that that my life will suddenly change when the calendar switches years. (It didn’t) If that is the case then why do we need to have resolutions? Please don’t get me wrong, I’m all for making what you deem to be a positive change in your life. I also realize sometimes the changing of the calendar year is a good time to start, especially if you need to psych yourself up for something. However, even if I did follow through with two of the most popular resolutions – get fit and get organized – how much would my life change? I get the feeling that I would find something else in my life that needs to be fixed. How satisfied are we ever with our own lives?

To those reading this I hope 2011 is a year of great things to happen!

Goodbye Greinke

I enjoy sports, but I’m not a sports fan. I will watch a game on tv if it has one of the teams I like and either nothing else is on, or it is suppose to be a really good game. Outside of KU Jayhawk basketball the sport I follow the most is baseball. I love the fact it is in the summer time and the rules are pretty much the same for the professionals as it is for little league. Movies about baseball are great to watch and my favorite has to be The Sandlot. I love history, and baseball has a great history.

I will confess I don’t know a lot about the different teams. My three teams are: KC Royals, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs, however, I can be persuaded to add to the list. Royals are the home team, and you must root for them. The Red Sox and the Cubs both have fans that even when they sucked they were still loved, and they have chosen to keep their stadiums. I have not yet seen Wrigley Field and I plan to tour/go to a game when I finally make a trip to Chicago. I did have the opportunity to tour Fenway Park in 2007, and fell in love. I have been told by some Yanks fans when discussing why I can never be a fan because they tore down their stadium – they had the nerve to say Fenway was going to be torn down. Uh no, the owners realize the history and are sinking a lot of money into Fenway – they realize it won’t be the same if they tore down and rebuilt. After watching Under Cover Boss I think the owners of the Cubs realize the same thing with Wrigley. The only team that got the “I will still like you even though you destroyed your history” pass is the St. Louis Cardinals. They are my second home team and many of my friends are fans of the Red Birds. I’ve gone to games in the old and new Busch Stadium. I should have added them to my list above.

I’ve grown up going to games at Kauffman Stadium since I was in elementary school. I pretty much wasted my role of film taking pictures of the fountains at that first game. Every time I go to a game I remember that first trip. They’ve done a major remodel and it looks great, but we still have the features that make it The K – a view of I-70 and the fountains. Walking in and near the top you can see Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs.

Sunday, the Royals made the news. Zack Greinke is leaving the Royals for the Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Royals for 5 years, and asked to be traded. Apparently he didn’t want to be on a re-building team anymore. I’ve watched many great players start out with the Royals and move on to better teams. There are very few players in any sport that are willing to stick to a team. I don’t buy shirts with a player’s name on the back because I know it will soon be outdated. I know they can get more money elsewhere, but I would like to see a real competition of talent and not just talented players on a team that pays. I’m disappointed, but I understand. When I hear the name Greinke I will remember he once played for the Royals just like Johnny Damon and Carlos Beltran. I wish Greinke luck in Milwaukee, and hope he doesn’t forget his beginning.

Changes

My world is changing, and major announcements were made shortly before I sat down to write this that will change life as I know it to a certain degree. I usually welcome change, but can sometimes apprehensive. I think that is a normal reaction, because you never know how positive or negative those changes are until a little ways down the road. I like to think that I adapt well and go with the flow. What else can we do – yesterday is history and who knows what tomorrow will bring? We cannot live in either period – I’ve unsuccessfully tried before.

Living in the now is challenging. It is easy to look back and make the past better than what it actually was and long to return to that perfect time. The future holds endless possibilities, and in our minds can be utopia. Living in the moment is hard because there are things we just don’t want to deal with and procrastinate. How often do you step back, take a deep breath, and fully take in the moment you are living? Probably not often – let’s try to do that more!

I’m sure that everything is going to work out. There are just a lot of rumors and unknowns in my career at this moment. One of my oxymorans is that I’m a free-spirited planner. I like to have a general map or directions that I consider a guide, but not a requirement.

Sunday between 6 – 10 PM CST if you can send any intelligent or trivial thoughts my way please do so. My team, “Party on, Wayne!” will be competing with about 55 others teams in the Kansas Trivia League. We made it though the semi-finals last Sunday.

The readers of YJKOBT seem to be an eclectic group and if we use our powers collectively to send knowledge to me then maybe just maybe “Party on, Wayne!” can win! Even if we don’t have super powers positive thoughts are always helpful.

Oh, yes every time our name is said my team and many others shout out, “Party on, Garth!” Even if we don’t win we are having a good time!

Inexperienced Coffee Snob

I’ve always thought I was just a foo-foo coffee drinker – like the high calorie ones you get from Starbucks. I’ve never been able to stand the coffee that comes from the “office” coffee pot and that is not just because I’ve smelled it burning. I had convinced myself it is because it is hard to have the fancy liquid creamers around – they usually need refrigeration and some of my offices that has been a slight challenge. I wonder how many inches I’ve added to the derriere making it the color of hot chocolate? Recent developments convinced me that I’m an inexperienced coffee snob.

At a Kansas City restaurant on Saturday I had Turkish coffee, and it was fabulous. I didn’t add sugar or anything to it. I could smell the coffee along with other spices. It tasted strong, rich, and the way I’ve always wanted coffee to taste.

The little sweet little grocery next to it sold their own Turkish coffee. Since I can’t get this fantastic drink where I live I’m thinking about getting all the supplies to do it at home and enjoy whenever I want. However, I will continue to avoid the office coffee pot at all costs and stick to my hot tea.

The Diet Dr Pepper Challenge

Doc had talked a couple weeks ago about Diet Dr Pepper tasting as good as regular Dr Pepper, and this got me thinking about the Cola Wars back in the 80s.

I barely remember commercials of the Pepsi Challenge to see if people liked the taste of Pepsi over Coca-Cola which I will not refer to as Coke.

I was reading a book that talked about this and they had professional food taste testers comment. Pepsi is sweeter and if you take one sip you are going to like Pepsi over Coke. However, Coke remained the leader. Why? Well, most people are not just going to open up a can of soda-pop (this is my way of preventing the pop v. soda war) take one sip and walk away from it. We are going to drink the entire can. Most people don’t want that initial sweetness for their entire soda-pop drinking experience and hence go back to drinking Coke.

Now it looks like Dr Pepper is doing a little soda-pop war of their own by saying their unleaded is as good as the leaded. Diet Dr Pepper was the first diet soda-pop I actually enjoyed. Other diet drinks were too icky and regular was too sweet. If you are going to do the Dr Pepper challenge enjoy a can of each to make your decision. My advice would be to split in half and take the challenge with a friend. Have fun!

A hiatus of sorts

Is anyone else busy as heck with work, the holidays, kids, and everything else? Yes I thought so. Everyone is busy, and so am I. Something has to give and I have decided to give the blogging a little rest.
No this blog isn't shutting down. It will still be here. I just can't promise that I will be posting on it daily for the time being. The great and insightful Disaster Chick will still be doing her weekly commentary on Tuesdays and I won't be totally gone. Whenever something reaches out to me and really needs posting I will post it. I will also of course be updating my Walk to 100 progress. (I am still outpacing the Bobcats)
So that's it... Maybe after we get through the holidays I will have more time and inspiration...

Make a Memory

What are the moments that stick out in your mind? Have they ever involved people you hardly knew? Would they care that moment has been implanted in your permanent memory?

I have been reminded of a conversation I had with three guys several years ago. While we share the same employer there is only one of them I have talked to since. I doubt if any of them remember me or what we talked about. They gave me a new perspective on something I was going to write off, and really gave me hope that good guys still exist. Today, one of them is burying his 33 year old wife. I won’t go to the services or otherwise contact him because we only had one conversation over dinner. While it is one moment that I will always remember, but I doubt it would register with him.

Life is short – even if you get to live to be one hundred years old. Everyone says it all occurred in a blink of an eye. I once read an article where actor John Leguizamo once said that with children “the days are long but the years are short.” Isn’t that how it is in our daily life? We go to work and can’t wait to get home only to begin the process again. All our days run together like the watercolor mess of an inexperienced artist.

We may never know the mark we actually made on Earth. We may never know how many lives we touched. We only have a few generations that we will actually be remembered unless we do something to make it into the history books. But history isn’t always made by world leaders, inventors, and activists. We touch people’s lives and transform small pieces of the world every day.

Get out and transform those moments into memories that way if you ever get Alzheimer’s you will have reflections of many great moments.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving there won't be a "Random Thoughts" post so I figured I would just have a few here:

- I don't know about you all but I really enjoy Thanksgiving. A break from work to not only give thanks but spend time with the Three 'F's" Family, Food, and Football. We are going to my parent's house and should have a great day. I'm deep frying our Turkey and that doesn't work well in the rain, so lets hope the showers stay away.

-There have been a bunch of odd news stories recently and I have been thinking about bringing back my "hitting the high notes" segment again. Mt. Cat sent me one recently. Check out this article about a transgendered woman posing as a doctor who was arrested for giving breast exams in a bar. I mean who lets anyone give them a breast exam in a bar anyway? Here is her (or his) mugshot.

-I'm not one who is much for shopping anyway but the idea of "Black Friday" shopping terrifies me. The idea of a whole bunch of ladies hungover on tryptophan stampeding to get $5 laptops could easily be a horror movie.

-The results from my Pro Football Pick Em league have been interesting... As of today there is literally a three way tie for the lead. Evil Twin's Wife, Jayman, and myself are tied for the lead with the exact same score. Pretty amazing.

-On a related note, I am thinking about doing a Pick Em game fro College bowl Pickem so let me know if you are interested.

-While I was thinking of what to include in today's blog post I asked for suggestions on Twitter and my friend Dysfunctional Supermom suggested that I blog about her. So here goes: If you aren't already reading the great blog by the uncontested Supermommy of Dysfunction then you should be. Why? Because reading about the life of a woman who keeps trying on husbands and juggling her "spawn" across the United States is not only funny, but also entertaining... and if you pay close attention you may learn a thing or two while laughing along with her. Give her blog a read and maybe you too can become a "pantyliner"

Dweeb - Dork - Nerd - Geek - and You!

If you consider yourself to be one of the cool kids you can stop reading this blog right now. Really, you are much too cool to learn about the differences in Geeks, Nerds, Dorks, and Dweebs.

Yes, there is more to us than what you see in the Big Bang Theory, and there are major differences.

The three main components are Intelligence, Obsession, and Social Ineptitude. If the cool kids are still reading I will explain these components a bit more.

Nerds, Geeks, and Dweebs possess intelligence. One usually thinks those that possess intelligence are know-it-alls with superior mental powers, but that really isn’t the whole story. A really intelligent person realizes how much they don’t know. Intelligent people acquire and apply knowledge using thought and reason. You don’t have to be Einstein or Sheldon Cooper to be intelligent – you just have to think though and apply reason and knowledge to problems.

Obsession is where the cool kids are lacking. Geeks, Nerds, and Dorks are ones that are obsessed. Do you see the cool kids at a Star Trek convention? Obsession can be cute, but it can also scare people or just make them think you are weird. People tend to look down on people that read romance novel. I once read a historical romance writer saying her job isn’t easy, because if she mentions a gadget that hadn’t been invented, a wrong piece of clothing that wasn’t trendy or used in that period – her readers will let her know. Any more we expect obsession in occupations. How many of us have to specialize? Very rarely do we see a doctor any more – we go to the pediatrician, the ob-gyn, the proctologist, the dermatologist, and so forth. I’m sure the internet has helped out with obsession too because you can find groups online that share your obsession – dogs, cars, tracking currency, games, television shows, and even fan fiction.

Finally, social ineptitude is what distinguishes the Nerds, Dorks, and Dweebs from the Geeks. The Geeks can handle most situations involving people, and will probably even actually like people. Being an extrovert and I have a hard time understanding introverts. They hate social situations – they would rather have the safety of a computer to visit with people. They can be very outgoing online, but face to face is a different story. I have a friend with a very introverted wife and she feels like people are going to hurt her. It has taken her about six years to warm up to me because I’m reckless at times.

Thursday Random Thoughts 11/18/10

Stuff I have been thinking about:

-Don't you just hate when someone says, "Well I'm just doing my job?" I hear that all the time around here and I think it's a cop out.

-Mmmmm Diet Dr. Pepper DOES taste more like regular Dr. Pepper. In fact I think it tastes even better than regular Dr. Pepper.

-Speaking of Dr. Pepper, I can't be the only one out there who thinks that the Cherry Dr. Pepper commercial with KISS and Mini Kiss is completely awesome? Admit it you like that commercial.

-So Prince William is getting married next summer. I remember when I was a kid my Mom getting us up really early in the morning to watch Diana and Charles' wedding. Maybe we will do the same thing for this wedding.

-This Prince William wedding is going to be so huge it's already one of the biggest news stories going. I'm happy for them but I do think that giving his fiance Diana's ring is kind of weird. It's just that considering Diana's marriage broke up and then her death and all.

-Once you hear the "Sniff" in Uncle Kracker's "Follow Me" you can't help but hear it EVERY time.

-I read the other day where Florida Governor Charlie Crist is trying to posthumously pardon Jim Morrison from his lewdness conviction in 1969. THAT is pretty cool. Especially for a Republican.

-So Thanksgiving is next Thursday... I can't wait, in part because I'm gonna do the turkey for the first time in my Turkey Fryer I got last year. It's gonna be GREAT!!

-So defeated SC senate candidate Alvin Greene has new political ambitions. He says he is going to run for President in 2012. Um yeah Alvin, You just keep on believing that one buddy.

- Had a discussion with my wife the other day about which of us was a bigger nerd. Of course I won chiefly because I'm taking a half day off work to see the New Harry Potter movie tomorrow. Yeah I'm pretty proud of it too. HA!

Fired for having big breasts?

Meet Amy Erin Blakely. I have been reading recently about her and her claims that she was fired from her job at a children's charity called The Devereux Foundation for gender discrimination. Get this because her breasts are too big and they were distracting for her co workers.

Oh boy this is a classic on several levels. The first is that her attorney is Gloria Allred. Yep the same "woman's rights" attorney whose previous clients have included porn stars and strippers who shook down Tiger Woods for money during his infidelity episode earlier this year. If you aren't familiar with Gloria let me tell you I am not a fan. She has done some good things like representing Amber Frey the mistress of wife killer Scott Peterson and the Brown family during the OJ case but the shaking down of Tiger Woods whether he deserved it or not was just too much for me. She even represented Debrahlee Lorenzana recently, the woman who claims she was fired from Citibank for being "too sexy." I think Gloria is an opportunist and an ambulance chaser.

OK, back to the breasts. Now just looking at the pictures here of Ms. Blakely I would agree with her being attractive because she is but the case here seems to revolve around her breasts. A few quotes:

"It was very humiliating to know that senior members of our management team would focus on my breasts as opposed to my performance on the job," said Blakely at a Los Angeles press conference Wednesday. " She also alleges that someone in management talked about how large her breasts were and that she needed to 'hide them,'" Allred told the station.

See, they keep playing up the breast thing because it's what sells and what gets the headlights errr I mean headlines. I think they have a "tiny" problem though. Where's the big breasts? I have googled and checked numerous news stories and none of the pictures show Ms. Blakely as having anything other than normal sized breasts?? Trust me, I have looked.

I think this case comes down just as the other recent Gloria Allred cases. She is trying to use the media to drum up pressure for some quick cash and not representing woman's rights. The proof is in the pictures on this one because I think clearly this case would be thrown out of court for "lack of evidence" so to speak.

A Week in the Life...

What a week this has been for me!

I spotted no bed bugs after inspecting. I did get a change of hotels so I could be with everyone else when one VIP cancelled his room. You know it wasn't any more special than any other hotel room.

I was very lazy starting Thursday. I haven't had much time at home so I was pretty much was in front of the tv just hanging for most of the long weekend. I wanted to accomplish stuff, but the energy disappeared. Life in the Snuggie was much more appealing

I did take the Vespa out for a ride. At that point I racked up 30 miles. I also discovered 30 mph can be very fast. Hmmm...in my car that would have to be 130 for me to say that. Well, I laid the bike over doing a right hand turn. This time no damage to the bike other than scratched chrome on the mirror. Myself, well, I have some interesting shades of blue and feel like I did a really good workout. Ah, more reason to be a lazy bum.

Later that evening I think I had a date. Yes, I'm horrible at dating. My last relationship ended September 2008, and not really much happening since then. We have a Facebook mutual friend (a coworker of his), the dude that cuts my hair knows him, and I think one of my best friends sorta knows him. I haven't felt the need to really start finding out what I can on the 'net to see if he is married, a sex offender, or something - and I've never fel the need to pay to have a background done on any guy I've ever dated. He seems to be a nice, safe guy. We've gone out twice and he has paid for everything and hasn't even tried to hold hands. He is great to talk to, and we both enjoy movies and triva. I'm trying not to rush it and let things develop organically.

I'm being myself. I've tried to pay and might have to be a bit sneaky. I'm not used to a guy being nice to me. We will see what happens. I'm in new territory.

Sunday, I walked out an a weir. I had no idea what a weir was until seeing it. It is a dam in a river. The river was low so I could walk over it. Normally there is water going over it and if you are boating you are suppose to remove your boat and relaunch on the other side. The river is said to have strong current but it was hard to believe until we approached the seperation area where water was rushing. That was pretty impressive. I'll need to go out there and check out more sunsets. That was an enjoyable thing to do with my mom and the Boston Terrorist.

I started off Monday by dropping the work cell phone in the toilet. Well, I'm going to get another one - just not sure if it will be one that is currently there or if they will order me what they are moving to. I hope it is a new one. I'm just happy I don't have to use a toilet phone. My joke is calling it the Bat Phone because it rarely rings but when it does...

Happy Friday, I need one of these

So how is everyone doing this wonderful Friday? I'm doing great so far. For some reason a whole bunch of people decided to take the day off from work. This is just fine with me. There will be less people for me to deal with and I will surely be able to slip out a little bit early.

So since it's apparent that I'm phoning it in today I figured I would do the same with my blog posting and skip a post today. Then I saw this awesome picture below and knew I had to share:

My parents and In-laws keep asking me what I want for Christmas and I say forget the I-Pod I want get me a "Toast Saber" Completely awesome and a quick time saver... Toast is so yummy with a little butter and grape jelly but I don't eat it all that often because I have so little time in the morning. This would solve all those problems. Please somebody get me one of these.

Ok so maybe I still mailed it in a little bit on my blog post, but give me a break. IT'S FRIDAY!!

Thursday Random Thoughts 11/11/10

Stuff I have been thinking about:

-First and most importantly today is Veterans Day. Please say thank you to those who have served and protected us and allowed us to live in a free country.

-Since it's a holiday and schools are closed here my wife and son get to come and have lunch with me. I really love when they come and visit my office and most everyone here enjoys seeing my son. Plus he gets to pick where we eat and he loves Jimmy Johns!

- Someone from Lockheed Martin found the blog yesterday searching for information about the mystery missile over Los Angeles. I wonder if they liked my theory. HA HA!

-So far so good with the switch from DirecTV to cable except for one thing. The DVR only holds 25 hours of programming as opposed to 100 hours that our TiVo held. That is kind of disappointing but everything else so far is great.

-Apple Jolly Rancher candies are filled with awesome!

-I heard that Kanye West has taken back his apology to Taylor Swift for jumping up on stage and ruining her acceptance speech. Really Kanye? Are you really sure you want to do this? Taylor kicked your ass last year in the court of public opinion and my bet is she does it again. That is if you are still relevant enough to matter. No offense but you really haven't had a good song since Golddigger.

-So what is it with this new fad where women are wearing these shaggy high heeled boots with skirts and skinny jeans and stuff? I couldn't find an exact picture of what I'm talking about but these are close. I have seen this a lot especially out at the football games I have been to recently. Seems to be a trend for the late teens and 20 something ladies. I'm pretty sure I don't like it.

-I am loving my new smartphone! We were finally able to extend our plan and get smartphones this past weekend and decided to go all out. I got the Android. A 4G Samsung Epic with QWERTY keyboard and it is pretty amazing what all it can do. I am so glad that I didn't go with the Blackberry and it was certainly worth the wait. Only problem is the battery seems to run down very quickly. I know that this phone does a lot of stuff that can suck down battery life but you guys find the same thing is true with your smartphones?

-To continue this weeks "Google" theme I wanted to share this. Yesterday when researching my post I came across this website Bing vs. Google. Check it out sometime. It gives you search results at the same time from both Bing and Google. Kind of cool!

Ok who has been shooting missiles off?

I am sure that by now everyone has heard about the "mystery missile" seen over Los Angeles by a news helicopter on Monday night. In case you missed it I have posted a couple of pictures of it here so you can see. Pretty neat huh?

What is it? Is it a military missile or something else. "The U.S. military says it's not theirs. A spokesperson for the Navy says no activities were planned in the area at that time.
Officials at the Pentagon also did not know any details about the launch and said that it could not have been planned military action." NORAD says its not a "foreign missile" So of course speculation is running rampant. Are we under attack? Was this a military exercise they are trying to cover up for some reason? Is it just a an airplane contrail as some civilian aviators have postured? Who knows?

The FAA says that it could have been a projectile launched by a private company although none had been given the required license to do so. With this in mind I have developed a theory. I think that Google did it. We all know that google is trying their best to take over the world and this is the logical next step.

Google has a lot of enemies and needs to protect itself. There is censorship in China and we know the Chinese government is no fan so maybe this missile thing is the way that they can get back at them? Maybe they were trying to show the people of LA the they are far superior to Yahoo! who could never shoot off a missile. Or perhaps Google was trying to blow up Bing and take them out? This actually seems like about as likely a cause as any, so that's my answer. Google shot off the missile.

Obsessive Compulsive or Just Cautious?

I’m leaving on an overnight trip for work. I’m usually pretty excited to get out of the office and change the routine my life for a brief period of time. Don’t get me wrong I still am excited for the change of pace. The problem is I have office mate that has spread her obsession and fear of bed bugs on to me. I don’t mind bugs. I once dated a guy that wanted to be an entomologist so I got to learn about bees and beetles and even held his pet Madagascar Cockroach named Andy (the cockroach not the ex-bf). Andy was not a very happy cockroach, and would hiss when petted. It was fun to make Andy hiss. Making the ex-bf hiss wasn't as much fun, and even when innocent I usually got the blame - but it was his female roomate from Germany that was the final nail in the coffin of our relationship. They got married less than a year after we broke up, and last I knew still married. But I digress. The picture surrounded by this paragraph is what a Madagascar Cockroach looks like. I know you probably didn't have the opportunity to date my ex, and may not have an opportunity to know what one looks like.

I’m the kind of person that has considered bringing in a black light to check out the hotel room. Many, many, many people have said don’t do it! Needless to say I haven’t. It would be nice to know – don’t sit in that chair, or even wonder WTF happened here. Unlike my friend JY, I’ve never been shown a room I thought a murder occurred. Yikes!

Because of the office mate I downloaded how to search for bed bugs. Here is my plan of action. I’ve already checked two national registries and they are clear. I’m going to leave all bags zipped and place in the bathroom. This should be my pull bag, purse, lap top, and my backpack will contact the list of places to check and a flashlight. I will check the where the ceiling and wall meet because they like to hang out there. I will try to remove the drawer by the bed, but if I can’t I will look underneath because that is also a favorite hideout. I will then unmake the bed and check out the mattress and a small part of the box springs because they are after all, bed bugs. I would like to pull the headboard off the bed, but since I’m solo this would be a challenge. I will see what I can do to look behind it. Hopefully the bathroom is big enough to leave the bags in there overnight – or at least while I shower. Maybe this will help me get ready and packed faster in the morning.

Am I too easily influenced by others? I had a former boss never get into a hotel hot tub. He told me about someone he worked with that traveled regularly and stayed at very nice hotels. Apparently one time he had a scab on his leg, and got into a hot tub. The hotel didn’t do a good job treating the hot tub, and bacteria in the hot tub that gave him an infection that caused him to lose his leg. Needless to say if I have a scab anywhere on my body I avoid public hot tubs. Well, since I don’t have my own I avoid all hot tubs.

Better off safe than sorry, right? We don’t live long enough to make all the mistakes for ourselves so we do need to learn from others. I really don’t want to lose a leg or another appendage to my body. I also don’t want to spend at least $1,000 for bed bug removal – so maybe it is a good idea to let the phobia of others influence me to take five minutes to check out the room. May I’ll get a black light bulb tonight too.

Randy Quaid Has gone Crazy

Have any of you all been following the recent news stories about Randy Quaid and his wife Evi? If you haven't been then let me give you a quick recap.

-Last year Randy and his wife were sought on fugitive warrants claiming that he defrauded an innkeeper of more than $10,000 and they fled justice.

-After being caught and sent back to Texas they cleared up the charges but not before Randy brought his Golden Globe award to court to try and show as collateral.

-This year Randy and his wife were arrested for illegally squatting in a home owned by others and accused of serious vandalism of the property.

-Evi had a restraining order taken out on her for threatening and menacing the owner of the home they were squatting in.

-Once again they fled justice and went to Canada, claiming refugee status and trying to become Canadian citizens because, (get this) they are on the run from the "Hollywood star-whackers" who they say may have contributed to the deaths of stars such as David Carradine, Michael Jackson, and Heath Ledger.

OK did you get that? Hollywood star whackers... Yes there are some crazy things out there but thinking that someone wants to knock off cousin Eddie and his wife is ludicrous. First of all if there were star whackers wouldn't they have already done in Lindsay Lohan and Heidi Montag? Yet we are still being harassed by them every day. Even if there are Hollywood star whackers what makes Randy Quaid a target? Are they planning on making another Vacation movie that I am not aware of?

My next thought is that Randy is starting to look crazy too. I almost didn't recognize him in the picture to the right when he got sprung from Canadian jail the other day. When I saw it it made me immediately think of Gene Hackman's paranoid crazy character in Enemy of the state instead of Cousin Eddie. What do you think?

I am thinking that instead of political asylum this pair needs to be locked away in a different kind of asylum.

Thursday Random Thoughts 11/4/10

Stuff I have been thinking about:

-My mother in law keeps telling me that I look like I am losing weight. Since My scale doesn't seem to agree with her I wonder what she is up to telling me that?

-Speaking of my in laws. We had a great visit from them last weekend that included a trip to the NC Zoo and other great stuff. They also gave me a new grill for my birthday which is AWESOME!

-I saw this picture to the right last week and thought to myself that the target demographic for drinkers of Olde English 800 sure has changed since the days I was in college.

-Since we are on the subject of drinking here is one for you. My wife's uncle and his new wife are a little bit odd. Here is an example. They recently told the family that apparently drinking wasn't good for them so they have come to a decision. They are going to give up drinking. From now on they are only going to drink wine. WHAT??

-Last week I tailgated (ie. ate food out of the back of a vehicle in a parking lot) three days in a row! Thursday at NC State, Friday at the AL Brown Wonders game, and Saturday at the zoo. Yes folks we tailgated at the zoo! #WIN

-I forgot to tell you all last week that my son got the entire crew of waitstaff at Red Lobster to sing to me for my birthday. He was very upset that I didn't want to be sung to and told the waiter, "NO, you HAVE to sing Happy Birthday to my Daddy" Very sweet, even though I didn't want them too.

-One last thing about my son then I will go. He really got into the trick or treating this year as most 3 and a half year olds will. The cool thing was after his time to be out was over he really also got excited about giving out treats to all the "visitors" that came to our house telling them things like, "Hey weve got candy for you!" and "You are scary, have some candy!" Such a sweet kid.

Election finally OVER!

A few thoughts about this election and then we will drop the political stuff and get back to normal.

-There seems to be a good trend showing in this recent election and that is that more people seem to be getting involved in the process. This is a good thing in my opinion. More people in the process may actually get Washington to listen. Eventually.

-The main candidates I was supporting Larry Kissell and Cabarrus county Sheriff Brad Riley were both re-elected. This is a bonus (I actually got to meet the Sheriff at my polling place) because both will work hard for the people they represent regardless of their party affiliation.

-The coverage last night on MSNBC was classic as usual. Cris Matthews tried to get Republicans to answer questions that they ducked all night and Keith Olbermann lobbed softballs at the Democrats. Nothing new to report here.

-Rand Paul, newly elected Senator from Kentucky scares me to death.

-Republicans take back the House of Representatives but the Democrats keep the Senate. Should make for interesting politics in the next few years. Hey Republicans, you got your wish "No more Nancy Pelosi." Be careful what you wish for. Hello John Boehner. #justsayin

-To wrap up my thoughts last night I will say that the best comment of the night came on Twitter from my buddy Jayman. It genius is in the simplicity. After projecting that the Republicans would take back the House I remarked that nothing would get done in the next two years. Jay's comment - "We might be better off with nothing getting done" Truer words never spoken.

Make Your Voice Be Heard

Today is Election Day across the United States. As US Citizens we have a right to make our voices be heard. I’m urging everyone one of you to get out and vote. Polls are open today from 7 AM to 7 PM. I don’t care if you are voting Democrat, Green, Independent, Libertarian, Republican, or Tea – make your vote count!

Many people don’t think the Presidential Mid-term elections mean that much. They mean just as much if not more than the Presidential Elections. Why? Statistically less people get out and vote. This makes your vote/voice even louder. Another way to look at elections is very similar to emergency management: all disasters are local. I’m not calling your local politicians a disaster, but local elections are where your voice is the most powerful. Do you know the names and stances of your following office holders: school board, city council member, mayor, county commissioner, district attorney, county treasurer, state representative, state senator, judges, governor, state school board, state treasurer, attorney general, secretary of state, us representative, us senators that are representing you?

Voting really should be proactive and not reactive. Kansas is a good example of a reactive state. Kansas is the state that has a couple of times that has banned the teaching of the theory of evolution. However, each time the we ban the teaching of evolution the next election cycle we change it back to allowing the theory of evolution to be taught. I’ve seen this bumper sticker: Kansas -- Where Evolution Is Outlawed And The Monkeys Are In Charge.

Please don’t be a one issue voter – take a look at the campaign literature – and if you have already thrown that out do a search on the candidates whose signs you see in your neighborhood. Whose overall viewpoint best matches what you believe?

Many times we often hear people say Congress is messed up – we just need to start from scratch. Yet, how many of us say, “well, my representative does a good job – it is the rest of Congress”? I have a good friend that never votes for an incumbent. I often tell him, you really need to look what the person stands for and do their political views match yours?

Have you ever noticed that you get to determine if a judge gets to retain their position? This is a time to see if they are soft or hard on criminals. Do you agree with their stance? Are they part of the problem for the back-up of the court system? I’ve heard of several judges that are paid full time yet only working part time – how is this helping out our criminal justice system?

Evolve -don’t let the monkeys be in charge of your government.

Stuff I have been thinking about:

-Uh Oh, I read the other day that they are making Halloween themed Peeps. Yuck. As if peeps hadn't already ruined Easter now they want to mess up Halloween too.

-Am I the only one who doesn't like "Select a Size" paper towels? Hey I mean just give me the full paper towel please!

-Speaking of things I'm not a fan of please add the "spork" to that list. Give me either a fork or a spoon but not some strange hybrid of the two that doesn't get the job of either done properly.

-Looking back at Disaster Chick's birthday post to me on Monday and I why wonder why Marilyn needed the words to sing Happy Birthday to Kennedy?

-Beware when anyone says, "Oh it's just a natural part of being a human being. Everyone does it." or something like that because I promise you something gross is coming up next.

-I'm taking a half day at work today and heading up to Raleigh for the Florida State - NC State football game tonight. Should be a fun time and a great game but say a quick prayer for me. NC State fans are not known for being the most hospitable or polite to visiting fans so I hope I am safe... GO NOLES >>>-----;;;------->

-In last week's random thoughts post I made the mistake of bragging that I had started downloading music on Limewire. That didn't last long. The website has been shut down for legal reasons. So ends my brief foray into music downloading. Oh well it was fun the 2 times I did it.

- Ever since I cleaned out my desk drawer I have been doing much better about not hoarding ketchup packets. I don't think there is ever a situation where I will need 100 of them.

-My wife and I decided to get rid of DirecTV and consolidate our TV, home phone, and internet service into the Time Warner "Triple Play" bundle. I think it's going to save us upwards of $145 a month and we really can't ignore that kind of savings. I just hope I don't miss any of my sports channels too much. Anyone else done this? Any problems or issues.

-So far I still feel great and haven't gotten "The Funk." Knock on Wood!

-It's almost time to break out my one Christmas decoration that I use on my desk. It's a reindeer that is made out of the same greenery that they make fake Christmas trees out of. I love this little guy and I only get to put him up for 2 months a year. (the rest of the year that spot is taken by a Jeff Gordon antennae ball) I might have to take a picture for you guys and post it later in Christmas season.

I don't want the funk.

I don't want it.

My son was sick all weekend and then yesterday my wife came home from work with it. It's the funk. The fever and stomach virus that makes your life completely miserable for 24 hours or so.

I'm doing everything I can to not get this. I am Washing my hands extra and I even slept downstairs on the couch last night.

I don't want it. I can't get sick. I have stuff to do. Work yes, but more importantly I am supposed to go to Raleigh tomorrow for the Florida State - NC State football game. I can't miss that.

Plus my in-laws are coming into town on Friday and we are going hang out all weekend and do Halloween type stuff and maybe go to the Renaissance Festival. Too much fun stuff to do and I don't want it.

As I sit here though my stomach is feeling kind of odd... AHHHHHRRGGHHH!

Do you get the feeling I don't want it?

Interesting People in History

How many of you know about the woman that held the very first patent to the brassiere? She was Mary “Polly” Phelps Jacob to later change her name to Caresse Crosby. At age 19 the brassiere was only the first interesting event to happen in her life.

Whale-boned corsets were the only acceptable way for a lady to be presented which were very uncomfortable and like many fashions even today were not designed for a naturally well endowed female. Polly planned on wearing a sheer gown that didn’t fit quite right with a traditional corset so she had her maid take two silk handkerchiefs and some pink ribbon to create the very first brassiere. Unlike the other bra-like inventions at the time this was soft and did more flattening than flattering and naturally separated rather than pushing together. However, it did complement the fashions at the time. A patent was issued to her on November 3, 1914 for a “Backless Brassiere” Polly married Richard Peabody, and declared on May 19, 1920 that she was a married woman conducting a business using separate funds from her husband’s account. She later sold the patent to The Warner Brothers Corset Company, and they made much more than she ever did.

Her marriage to Richard was not a happy one. After World War I ended he was a drunk and was in and out of treatment facilities. At age 28 while her husband was in treatment she was asked to be a chaperone for a dinner and trip to an amusement park by Harry Crosby’s mother. Harry was a recent Harvard graduate and within two hours of meeting fell in love with Polly. She was six years older, married, and the mother of two small children. They soon had an affair that led to her divorce. All three families were members of society and were scandalized by the divorce, so Polly and Harry left Boston moved to New York City and then Paris.

Harry began cheating on Polly even before he got to Paris. Soon their life of glamour and luxury led to an open marriage. Polly changed her name to Caresse, upon Harry’s request. However, they had a suicide pact where they would jump out of a plane on October 31, 1942 when the earth would be the closest to the sun over several decades. They would then be cremated and ashes disposed by another plane. Possibly not the healthiest of relationships.

Together Harry and Caresse created Black Sun Press which began publishing their poetry. It became one of the most important small presses in Paris in the 1920s by publishing some of the first works from authors such has James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Ezra Pound, and Ernest Hemingway.

In July 1928 Harry met a soon to be wed Josephine, and began a love affair. Once she was married the affair ended only reunite about a year later. In December Harry and Josephine were found dead together – unsure if it was a murder/suicide or a suicide pact.

Caresse continued to run the Black Sun Press, and even tries acting. In 1934 she had an affair with Canada Lee, a black actor/boxer from 1934 though the mid-1940s not caring they were breaking miscegenation laws.

During this time in Hollywood she met Selbert “Bert” Saffold Young. He was eighteen years her junior and had been a football player and now an unemployed actor. She bought a farm in Virginia to please him. He was usually drunk and infrequently home. In 1950 she divorced Bert.

In the end she is also known for writing pornography, being a political activist, opened Washington D.C.’s only modern art gallery in the 1940s and was friends with Salvador Dali and Henry Miller. She wanted to create a “world community” which the organizations known as Women Against War and Citizens of the World. In the end she started an artist’s community 43 miles north of Rome. With the purchase of the land she acquired the title Princess.
January 1970 at age 78 Caresse died from pneumonia in Rome after having experimental open heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic.

Now this makes you wonder about the lives your grandparents and great-grandparents lived, doesn't it?

Stuff I have been thinking about:

-So far so good with the MLB playoffs. The two teams I am pulling for The Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants are leading in their League Championship series. Now don't get the idea that I am a huge fan of either of these teams, I am just kind of pulling against who they are playing, The Yankees and Phillies. GO RANGERS - GO GIANTS!

-By the way, Did anyone else find it a tad bit ironic the other day when Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod) was at bat and behind him was an advertisement from MLB promoting "Drug Free-Play Healthy" ?

-Am I the only one who is bothered that the movie Jackass 3D just set a record for the largest October movie opening weekend in the history of movies? Our society is in big trouble.

-Speaking of movies. I can't wait for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to open on November 19th. I am seriously considering taking a half day to catch and early showing.

-Since we are talking about Harry Potter I was pleased to read this article the other day saying that my Alma-Mater Lenoir-Rhyne University is hosting the first annual Harry Potterfest next weekend. It includes bands, an author, and even a Quidditch match. How come they didn't do anything cool like this when I was there? All we got was "Pauly Shore on Campus"

-I really need a haircut.

-Somebody asked me the other day if I was a "Daddy Blogger" Now I am not entirely sure what a Daddy Blogger is and even though I am a Daddy and a Blogger I kind of doubt I fall under this particular category.

-I read the other day that they are making a Hangover 2. I sure hope this one is decently funny

and in some way doesn't make a mockery of the original which is a classic. It appears that Mel Gibson will be making a cameo. Oh boy this could get good.

-33 years ago yesterday October 20th 3 members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in a plain crash in Mississippi. Southern rock's version of "The day the music died."

-On Monday I turn the BIG 39. Not really dreading this one but for some reason I am next years birthday. Man I'm getting old.

-One thing that I have been doing recently is downloading some music. Yes I know that I am late to the party on this one, but I have been worried that it was illegal and I could get sued by Ace of Base or somebody for downloading their music and I have no money for lawsuits. So I have gone to Limewire and downloaded 30 songs that I didn't already have and burned them to a CD. I'm not sharing it with anybody so they can't sue me. right?

Meet My new favorite Politician

My buddy The Mt. Cat sends me funny email all the time so it was no surprise when I got one from him yesterday. Little did I know that when I opened THIS LINK I would find my new political hero Jimmy McMillan. Who is Jimmy McMillan you ask? Let me introduce you. Here is Jimmy who is a candidate for Governor of New York from the Rent is 2 Damn High Party.

That picture was taken of him during the NY Governor's debate the other night and I think it's awesome that this guy is running. Here check out his website! Jimmy (aka Papa Smurf) has one agenda and one agenda only as a candidate. FIX THE DAMN RENT PROBLEM IN NY! (he feels that it is 2 high apparently)

The other night during the debate with other candidates like Andrew Cuomo, Carl Paladino, and Former Eliot Spitzer Madam Kristin Davis Jimmy stole the show. He dominated the conversation with his bold no nonsense style. Kind of a cross between a Pentecostal Preacher and Mr. T. where he kinds of shouts down other candidates and sticks to his singular message of bringing down the rent. When asked any question about what any problem is with NY his response is the same, "You know why that's a problem? Because the rent is too damn high!"

Here is Jimmy campaigning and apparently he is serious since he has run for Mayor before. My favorite quote from him is his explanation of why he wore black gloves on stage for the debate: "The chemicals of agent orange - dioxin and a lot of other chemicals mixed up - I would get sick. I know I'm not going to be able to breathe if I take them off. It could be psychological, I don't know, but I just put 'em on and wear them anyway."

Jimmy is picking up waves of support from all over in his bid for Governor. A stalwart of American political arena the American Mustache Institute recently endorsed his candidacy. About the only thing cooler that that would be an endorsement from the head of the Holy Order of Bagwine himself!

I wish that I could vote for Jimmy in the Governor's race but alas I'm not a citizen of NY. Of course most of my wife's family is. I think I must start lobbying them to vote for him... I am firmly in the "Rent is 2 Damn High" camp. (as long as he stops his racist blaming of Jews for the high rent) Anyone know where can I get a sign?

So yesterday to my surprise a picture of me ended up on a blog that gets over a million hits a day. It's a website that I go to often and I borrow pictures from it all the time so I can use them here. The website is called theCHIVE.

So how did my picture come to end up on this site? Well it's an interesting story that in some way ties me to Brett Favre. (yes that Brett Favre) I will tell you the story of course but first here is the picture that showed up on the website: (link to it here)

So who is that and why am I in this picture? That picture was taken at the ACC Championship game in Jacksonville Florida back in 2005. (picture taken by my buddy Absolutgator BTW) In the picture are me, my buddy Mike Fudge, and Jenn Sterger. Why is that name familiar to you? Well Jenn happens to be the person currently in the news because allegedly she received inappropriate voice mails and texts from Brett Favre.

We took this picture as a joke because friends of ours made fun of Mike earlier that year for another picture taken earlier in the football season where Mike wasn't wearing this belt.

The picture at the top clearly shows that Mike is making up for it by wearing his belt.

Last week the authors at theCHIVE were looking for new and unseen pictures of Jenn Sterger for their website (since she is suddenly more famous recently) so I sent them some that I have. The picture at the top was only meant to show that I had actually met her and that the pictures were legitimate. It wasn't supposed to be included in their gallery. Imagine my surprise when I pull up the site yesterday and it was the lead photo. They also weren't supposed to post another picture of one of my friends. Whoops!

Oh well it was fun and now I can officially say that I have gone viral. I may not be famous but I can guarantee one thing. I NEVER sent Jenn Sterger any voice mails or text messages!

My Night at the Speedway

We all had a great time on Friday night at the race from Charlotte Motor Speedway... I just had to share some pictures with you guys:

Here's the four of us at our table for dinner. Great view of the track and everything going on. This is the way to enjoy the race and a nice dinner!

Cup Series practice for Saturday night race was going on so we had to watch. Of course I had to take a picture of pole winner Jeff Gordon.

How good were our seats? So good that Speedway Motorsports owner and multi billionaire Bruton Smith was sitting just above us. (that's him on the right) High class baby!

This piece of prime rib that I ordered was so big I couldn't finish it. AND yes it was melt in your mouth fantastic too! (So was the Crown Royal)

OK so I took a bunch of pictures of the race but they all came out blurry (I assume due to the lighting) but I did get one of Danica's car after the race. That's her in the Go Daddy #7. She didn't do very well.

So as you can see we had a great time. Race car drive Steve Park (who is from my wife's hometown) sat down later at the table next to us. I have to thank my buddy Eric again for taking me. Certainly something every race fan should do at some point.

-It's Friday and I am really ready for the weekend. Tonight I am headed to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Nationwide Series Race featuring Danica Patrick. Will she win? Nope, she will be lucky to finish however she is a draw and makes people pay attention to NASCAR. Rock on Danica!

-The other super cool thing about tonight is that I have been invited to watch the race in the CMS Speedway Club. This is even way more than awesome. It's a fine dining country club located on the front stretch of the speedway where we can have a surf and turf dinner while the race is going on. Yes I'm not sure it gets any better than this. Yes I plan on taking some pictures to share. Sound like fun?

-Other that that we are planning on having a pretty low key weekend. Pumpkin farm tomorrow after soccer and relaxing on Sunday since the Panthers won't be losing. (they have the week off)

-Next weekend however we will be tearing it up... Because it's my birthday!

-Is it just me or are these new Google Ads cooler and more appealing than they used to be... Heck I'm even thinking about clicking on one and switching to Time Warner Cable! (Not sure what Groupon is though)

I hope that everyone had a great weekend. Ours was good... My brother and Sister in law were in town and FSU beat the heck out of Miami. Then there was the Panthers game yesterday. I have to say the best thing about that game was the brats:

Well I also called and spoke with MattMan and Jay from "I'm with Stupid" and that was pretty thrilling as well... Those guys are great!

Anyway, like I said I hope everyone else had a great weekend.

Last year during the NBA season, which lasts roughly from Halloween to Tax day I went on a sort of personal mission to walk 100 miles in hopes of being healthier and getting into somewhat better shape. I managed to meet that goal and felt quite satisfied with myself however I never really continued from there because the weather got so hot so quickly. As we head in to October and my local NBA team The Charlotte Bobcats begin training camp for their season I have once again started thinking about a challenge for this season.
I really enjoyed the walking even though times it was tough with the weather and I found myself walking indoors a lot. I think that I want to do this again but up the ante a little bit. Last year the Bobcats record was 44-38 and they made the NBA playoffs (even though they made an early exit) I figure that last season I walked about 2.27 miles for each Bobcat win during the season.
This season I think I should dial it up a bit. Figuring that the Bobcats should win about the same number of games (at least I hope) in 2010-2011 this is my challenge. I am going to pledge to walk 3 miles for each Bobcats win during the regular season and 5 miles for each win during the playoffs. Based on last season’s totals that would be 132 miles which is a pretty big step up from last year.
Hopefully they are at least as good as last year even though I'm not sure they will be.
I will do my best to keep updated on my progress once the season starts in two weeks.

I read this article about a guy who was arrested for indecent exposure here in my local area the other day and just had to laugh. Here give it a read:

ROCK HILL A North Carolina man faces indecent exposure charges after police say he was found without pants on taking pictures of himself Monday afternoon in the
parking lot of Sears at the Galleria Mall in Rock Hill.
The 47-year-old man, who lives on Naked Creek Road in Conover, N.C., was charged with indecent exposure after a man riding his bike to Walmart on Dave Lyle Boulevard alerted police, according to a Rock Hill police report.When police arrived, the man wasn't wearing anything on the lower half of his body, the report states. When officers asked why he wasn't wearing pants, he responded "I was trying to get a tan," the report states.

It seems that sometimes life is just full of ironic destiny isn't it? A man arrested for indecent exposure lives on Naked Creek Road. I had a little chuckle and I hope you do too.

A kid named "Natcher"

Our three year old started pre-school last week and he seems to be loving it. He gets to meet and play with other kids and do other fun stuff 3 days a week for a few hours so it's all good. Each day at dinner we try and ask him about his day and what he did at school. He seems to be telling us all kinds of wild stories about how the teachers won't let them play on the swings and they never got any snack that day so we kind of took it with a grain of salt.

On Wednesday he starts telling us about this "really bad guy" at school who pokes other kids in the eyes and wouldn't let him play with the brown firetruck. We asked him of course what this child's name is and he responded Natcher. Natcher? Not the name we had ever heard of before so my wife asked him if it was supposed to be Thatcher? No it's Natcher says our son.

My wife works out at the Y with one of the teachers and so she asked if there was a child with a name like that in the class and she says no, but they did have a kid poking kids in the eye the other day by a different name. Last night we asked our son if the kid poking others was this other child and once again he responded that it was Natcher.

We just kind of blew it off. Later on when it's almost bed time and our son is sitting on the potty my wife asks him if he is finished and he replies, I'm Natcher. Apparently in threeyearoldese Natcher is the way you say "Not sure." So all along he was trying to tell us that he was "not sure" of the other kids name. My wife and I had a good laugh about that one.

Banning Bottled Water?

Do you prefer drinking water from the tap or from a bottle? Concord, Massachusetts is the first city to ban the sale of bottled water in May. Many believe that the plastic bottles create waste and the production of plastic is not good for air quality.

I personally prefer to drink bottled water. My drinking water comes from a river, and a few weeks ago reservoirs were releasing water into the river. This usually isn’t a problem, but these reservoirs are filling up with silt and now we are getting blue algae blooms. The taste had a similar drinking water out of the fish aquarium. Not pleasant. One office has that 5 gallon water cooler. The other office I thought had a filter on the ice/water machine. However, my hot tea cup stains after one use, and I’ve never had the problem at home or other offices before; and this was before the algae bloom.

I was also reading that the EPA has stated that our national water infrastructure is going to need $335 billion in maintenance. Unfortunately, this does seem to very true. At least in my community I don’t see where we are planning for the future. In many ways our infrastructure is what made the USA great, and now we are letting it age and figure it will last forever.

Apparently the Beverage Marketing Corporation states that the bottled water sales average to 28 gallons a person. This tells me that many of us do not like the taste of the water that comes out of the tap. Is there a way that it could taste better? Or is this really more a matter of convenience?

I personally don’t think banning water is a good thing. I just read about a boil order advisory issued do to a major water main break. Also bottled water is one of the necessities when it comes to a disaster to keep victims and emergency workers hydrated. How many times does someone drink bottled water rather than a sugar loaded drink because of the convenience? Maybe we should have water bottle refill spots to encourage people to use their Nalgene, stainless steel, or similar reusable bottles and get filtered cold water for a quarter.

Retro Playground

I had lunch at a park recently with my mom. After looking around she said it isn’t right that they don’t have any swings here. She starts saying there were kids that did break their arms when they jumped back in the day, but it was common sense to know you were too high to safely jump. This led to a discussion of the plastic used to guard fingers from the chains.

We then started talking about the missing jungle gym that was taller than an adult, the monkey bars, the merry-go-rounds, and the tornado slide that was always placed in the sun that I avoided on really hot days, because I ALWAYS wore shorts.

I was in junior high/high school when my grade school got rid of the monkey bars. I realized I didn’t start gaining weight until after I stopped playing on the monkey bars. I still can bring back my monkey bar blisters after a few minutes of play. I would like to play on them again to naturally build up my upper body strength. My favorite machine at the gym is the one that you do the assisted pull-ups because it brings back the feeling of the monkey bars.

The monkey bars were not my favorite, but the swings were often taken, so I would go to the monkey bars or the pipe if I need to talk with someone. The pipe is missing to. It looked like something out of Super Mario Brothers. You could crawl in, position yourself like the letter “c” or "u" if you were not in a dress and take your chances of someone listening in or you could do the running leap on and jump on top. There you could position yourself like a lady then slide down or you could straddle it like a horse and play those hand games.

I know not all of the playground equipment is banned - just at the nicer parks. I came up with the idea of “Retro Park” where we bring back all the “dangerous” and banned playground equipment without the bouncy rubber mats surrounding it too. Either adults could relive childhood or kids could see what mommy and daddy played on. Only thing is you would have to sign a waiver not to sue Retro Playground if you or your child happened to get hurt – just like the good ole days of our youth.

-Last week was a really brutal week at work. In addition to just coming back from vacation I was asked to take on a whole lot of additional work. Back to the days where I had an assistant kind of work. Not sure what I'm going to do but I certainly don't really have any blog/twitter time anymore. Last week was so bad I came home from work Friday very close to a full blown anxiety attack. Thank goodness for the weekend. Hopefully this week will be better but that is yet to be seen. (and hopefully I get a chance to get caught up on reading your blogs)

-Our new roof is going on the house today. This makes me very happy. Insurance took care of the entire replacement cost including the garage that was not effected (so that the shingles will match) Yay, One less thing we need to take care of before selling this house! Now if we could just get someone to take care of paying to replace the carpet.

-If you are a member of the blog and twitter Fantasy football league please make sure that you are ready for the draft. This time next Monday I will be turning on the draft so there will be plenty of time to make trades after the draft is over.

-We found out this past week that Lil Doc will be starting soccer this coming Saturday. Nothing could make me happier. He is excited too. I don't think this 3 year old soccer is going to much resemble the World Cup but it's organized team soccer where I think he will benefit not only from the running around (and getting tired out) but also taking direction and learning rules from someone other that my wife and I. Several of his friends are on the same team so all the parents are going to hang out and watch. And it's safe to assume a few pictures will be taken.

-Summer reading quest update. I am halfway through year six in my summer quest to re-read the Harry Potter series. I am still really enjoying it. Great summer reads. I would be finished except that I took a break and read the new Daniel Silva book while on vacation last week. (The Rembrandt Affair by Silva was great and I highly recommend it as well) Should finish up the Potter Series in about 5- 7 days. Then want to try books recommended to me by The Mt. Cat by Dennis Lehane.

-Is anyone else left a little bit angry that accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff committed suicide this weekend? This is a person who deserved to have to answer for what he was accused of doing (and apparently did) in a court of law. Suicide is the chicken way out.

It all Starts Today

My very favorite sports teams season kind of unofficially gets under way today and I'm excited. The 2010 Carolina Panthers season starts today when the players report to training camp in Spartanburg SC. It's just the beginning of a long season that unlike any in recent years will feature a lot more changes and a lot of uncertainty. With uncertainty can come optimism. So today I find myself cautiously optimistic. Oh what the heck I will admit it. I'm fired up.... BRING ON FOOTBALL SEASON !!

Is anyone else fired up and ready for football season? Let me know who you pull for High School, College, Pros, All three? i love all three myself but there is just something extra special about the NFL for me. Lemme know who is excited out there that it's almost here. For you NFL fans this time next year there very likely will be no football so lets enjoy this year!

OK folks, It's time for this weeks installment of Worst Person. Last week we had an epic battle between Rachel Uchetel and The Cast of Jersey Shore. As with everything it seems recently the cast won! This week a few new nominees. Some of which you might not be familiar with.

Melinda Dennehy - This 41 year old former teacher joins the ranks of the Hot for teacher crowd as yesterday she pleaded guilty to a charge she e-mailed nude photographs of herself to a 15-year-old student. And in the process is becoming a bit of an internet sensation like Debra Lefave. Apparently she was getting career advice from Mary Kay Letourneau. Shameful.

Andrew Brietbart - Andrew makes the list not only because he is a blowhard but because he posted an edited video of USDA employee Shirley Sherrod trying to defend the Tea Party movement by showing that the NAACP is actually racist. Ms. Sherrod was promptly fired and then when the whole context came out many apologies and back-tracking took place. Make sure you get it right the first time when it's this inflammatory Andrew.

Alvin Greene - The true accidental candidate from South Carolina who besides completely unknown, having little money, and apparently not too much common (or political) sense won SC's Democratic primary and will face incumbent Senator Jim DeMint in the fall. He makes the list this week for endorsing a rap song for his campaign that was meant to poke fun at him. If this guy can run it makes almost wish I had run for Senate when I lived in SC.

St. Louis Pigeons - No that's not the name of a sports team it's actually birds which in this case caused the cancellation of a Kings of Leon concert in St. Louis this past weekend after repeatedly pooping in bassist Jared Followill's mouth. YUCK! But worse than that fans only got to hear three songs. Something tells me that there is gonna be some pigeon-cide in St. Louis this week.

Roof Damage

The other part of our camping trip that I don't think I discussed on here was the damage we got in a windstorm while we were gone. We came home to find shingles blown off the roof and water damage on the interior of our master bedroom "popcorn' ceiling. The damage was not quite as extensive as this image I found on google but similar. I met with a contractor on Friday and he thinks to prevent it from happening again we need to have the entire roof replaced. *gulp* Since we don't have $7-9 Grand just laying around we quickly called our insurance company. Since I work in the insurance industry I am of course highly suspicious of insurance companies and just spoke with them. Of course they can't come and look until next week when I am up in NY. But it sounds like everything will be taken care of. Anxiety doing much better today than it was this weekend.
Anyone else ever had any roof/storm/shingle damage? Please tell me it all worked out OK.
